Description

(54) TRUCK CABS (71) We, B. L. Cs LIMITED, formerly BRITISH LEYLAND UK LIMITED, a British Company of Leyland House, 174 Marylebone Road, London, NW1 5AA, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to truck cabs and more particularly to those that are tiltable forwardly to allow access to an engine located beneath the cab floor, i.e.
the so-called "tilt-cab" type.
In our co-pending patent application No.
30158/75 (Serial No. 1555466) there is disclosed a tilt-cab arrangement in which members which are integral with the cab and the chassis respectively co-operate to form an engine enclosure when the cab is tilted to thus expose the engine. The purpose of the enclosure is to reduce the overall vehicle noise level.
The present invention is concerned with ihe construction of the tilt-cab itself and particularly with the so-called B-posts of the cab and the door frames. In the motor vehicle art the term A-post refers to the pillar supporting the roof at the windscreen and the term B-post refers to the next roof supporting pillar down the side of the vehicle.
According to the present invention, a truck cab includes at least one doorway the sides of which are defined by the A and B posts respectively, the bottom of which is defined by a sill and the top of which is defined by a cant-rail, the sill being of such a shape and being so secured to the A and B posts that between those posts in plan view the sill lies substantially entirely behind a line joining the inner faces of the A and B posts.
The advantage of the above feature is that it is easier for the driver or passenger in the cab to see the usual steps adjacent the front wheel of the truck by which he can get down from the cab. The problem of lack of visibility of the top step arises because firstly regulations limit the maximum overall width of the truck cab (including any protrusion of the steps) and secondly designers attempt to utilise this maximum width within the cab itself with the result that the cab overlies the steps and makes them difficult to see when getting out of the cab.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing the single figure of which is a perspective view of a doorway of a truck cab constructed according to the present invention.
A truck cab has two sides (one of which is shown in the drawing) each of which includes an A-post 1, a B-post 2, a cant-rail 3 and a sill 4, the latter four members together defining a door opening 5.
The sill 4 is box-sectioned and fabricated from two L-sectioned sheet steel members.
The sill is cranked in plan view at the B post. It is of such a shape and is so secured to the A and B posts that, between those posts, in plan view the sill is straight and lies substantially entirely behind a line joining the inner faces la, 2b of the A and B posts. To the rear of the B posts, the sill lies in line with the A and B posts.
Thus when the door (not shown) is opened the driver or occupant of the truck will be able to see the top step 7 of the usual steps 7, 8 which are provided for access to and exit from the cab.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A truck cab which includes at least one doorway the sides of which are defined by the A and B posts respectively, the bottom of which is defined by a sill and the top of which is defined by a cant-rail, the sill being of such a shape and being so
