Abstract
In order to bridge measurement circuits for current measurement, a plug device is provided consisting of two parts (1, 6) which can be plugged into one another. One part (1) is provided with contact springs (2) and the other part (6) with contact blades (7). A compression spring (3) is provided between the two contact springs, which are arranged at a distance from one another. A contact link (4) is arranged underneath the contact springs. An actuating piece (9) for moving the contact link is provided on the plug part (6). During insertion, the actuating piece presses against the contact link and thus interrupts the connection between the contact springs. Since the contact link is constructed as a leaf spring having arc-shaped curvature (5), the contact link carries out a rolling movement on the contact springs, as a result of which the contact-point region is self-cleaning. <IMAGE>
Description
(54) PLUG ANID SOCKET CONNECTOR (711) We, C. A. WEIDMÜLLER K. G. of 175 Paderborner Strasse, 4930 Detmold 14,
Germany (Federal Republic), a German
Company, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement : - This invention relates to electrical plug and socket connectors of the kind comprising a first part provided with a plurality of contact blades, and a second part provided with a plurality of mating contacts.
The present invention provides a plug and socket connector comzis- ing a first part provided with a plurality of contact blades, and a second part provided with a plurality of contacts arranged to make contact resiliently with the blades when the said parts are plugged 'one into the other, the second part being also provided with a movable bridging contact biased to a position in which it is in contact with at least two of the said contacts and the first part having an actuating member arranged to effect movement of the bridging contact away from the associated contacts when the said parts are plugged one into the other.
Thus, the said at least two contacts are electrically interconnected only then the parts of the connector are separated.
Such a connector is particularly useful for the connection of measuring circuits includling current transformers, for example in power stations. Current transformers are short-circuit-proof, but they must always be in the operating condition, i.e. with a curent-measuring device connected to the secondary side, or if the current measuring device is removed the secondary side must be short oircuited before isolation. Hitherto, shortcircuiting has been effected by short-circuit links screwed in position before removal of the likewise sorew-conneoted measuring device; this is an awkward and time-con- suing procedure. If the measuring device is connected by means of a connector embodying the invention, screw connections can be eliminated and the contact bridge provides automatic short-circuiting on is- conneotion.
Preferably, the maximum plugsin depth of the first and second parts is greater than the amount of plug-in movement necessary for the actuating member to separate the bridging contact from the associated contacts. Thus, on unplugging, short-circuiting will take place before the parts are fully separated, which is often convenient, and a detent may be provided for locating the parts in a position in which they are still mechanically interconnected but are electrically disconnected.
An embodiment of the invention is shown, by way d example, in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 shows, in section, a connector according to the invention, with its parts separated, and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view of the connector, with the parts fully con noted.
The illustrated connector has two parts 1,6, each consisting of an insulating plastics housing containing electrical contact elements.
The part 1, which is shown mounted on a supporting rail 16, is of Itwo-pole construction, containing two spring contacts 2 spaced from each other and each comprising a pair of fingers, one provided with a con duotor-cl,amping sleeve 17 and a clamping screw. Between the contacts is a compression spring 3 to provide contact pressure. The contacts face apertures 16 in the insulating housing.
The other part 6 of the connector con tarns two spaced contact blades 7 each associated with a conductor-clampi,ng sleeve 19 and a clamping screw. The contact blades are housed in a projecting region 20 of the insulating housing, which can be engaged oves the portion of the housing of the part 1 that contains the contacts 2, the blades 7 entering the apertures 18 and engaging the contact fingers as shown in Figure 2.
The part 1 also contains a bridging contact 4 constituted by a bent leaf spring below the contacts 2. The leaf spring has an arcuately bent free end 5, and the natural tesilience of the leaf spring urges the arcuate end S into contact wih both of the contacts 2 so that the latter are electrically interconnetted.
The leaf spring is accessible from the outside the housing of the part 1, and is arranged to be engaged by the lower portion 9 of the projecting portion 20 of the part 6 when the two parts of the connector are intereengaged as shown in Figure 2. The portion 9 serves as an actuating member which engages the leaf spring 4 and moves it away from the contacts 2 so that when the parts of the connector are interPengaged, the contacts 2 are no longer interconnected.
The portion 20 is also provided with actuating members 8 above the blades 7, .to act on the compression spring 3 thereby to facilitate operation when the parts are inter-engaged.
The part 1 is also provided with an in dictating device, in patacular a lamp 11 connected; to the leaf spring by wires 10, to indicate whether or not the bridging contact is in contact with the associated contacts 2; the indicator therefore serves also to indicate whether the parts of the connector are electrically isolated or connected.
The full depth of insertion of the actuating member 9 into the part 1 is greater than the depth of insertion necessary to separate the leaf spring from the contacts 2, so that the leaf spring can make contact with the contacts 2 when the parts of the connector are partly interengaged. The conacot blades 7 are corres pondingly set back behind the leading edge of the actuating member 9 so as to be separated from the contacts 2 when the parts of the connector are still partly i,nter- engaged. Preferably, however, on separation movement of the connector parts, the leaf spring makes contact with the contacts 2 before the blades 7 move clear of the contacts 2, so that the latter are never totally electrically isolated.
The position in which the parts are still machanically partly inter-engaged but electrical contact between the contact blades abd contacts 2 is broken and the latter bre interconnected by the leaf spring, is delkled ;by detent means comprising a ancbet tooth 13 on a flexible arm 21 ot with the housing of the part 6, and a nieting ress 14 in the housing of the part 1. A second recess 15 is provided for en eagemst by the tooth 13 in the fully engaged position of the conneotor parts. Lithe tooth is arranged to permit easy plugging in of the connector parts but to resist separation of the parts. To release the tooth b3 from the recess 14 or I5, the arm 21 is provided with a button 12. The housing of the part 1 has a slot or other opening to receive the ann 21 and button 12.
The described construction of the leaf spring, with an arcuate end, has the ad- vantage that when the spring is moved into and out of contact with the contacts 2, it executes a rolling motion on the latter, so that the contacts region is self-cleaning.
