Description

(54) METHOD OF REPRODUCING PAINTINGS AND/OR FRAMES IN THREE-DIMENSIONAL FORM (71) I, ROGER MILNER KING, a British subject, of Hertford House, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a method of reproducing paintings and/or frames in three dimensional form.
The present invention provides a method of reproducing a painting and/or a frame in three-dimensional form, comprising forming a first mould from the painting and/or frame, forming a second mould from the said first mould, forming a final mould from the said second mould, and forming plastics sheet in the said final mould to reproduce the painting and/or frame.
By means of the method according to the invention it is possible to reproduce a painting complete with a surrounding frame of any type or design to be in the same colours and finishes as the original, but most importantly for the first time ever to reproduce a painting identical in three dimensions to the original whereby every single brush stroke and surface texture is reproduced identically, in a relatively simple manner which would lend itself to mass production.
The plastics sheet is either vacuum formed or hot or cold pressed or embossed in the final mould.
The steps of the method are preferably as follows: 1. A solution is poured over the surface of a painting and/or a frame to form a mould, which, when it is set, is re leased from the painting and/or frame; 2. A second mould is then made from the first mould by similar means; 3. A final mould is then made from the second mould, for example in plastics, resin or metal; 4. Plastics sheet is then formed in this final female mould, for example by putting the final female mould in a vacuum forming machine and then forming plastics sheet in the mould and trimming the plastics sheet, the result being an identical copy of the front face of the original. Alterna tively, the plastics sheet may be formed by hot or cold pressing or embossing.
The sheet may be preprinted with re spect to the painting but either pre printed or subsequently decorated with respect to the frame.
In certain instances it may be necessary to make the main frame and back of the painting by the same means and then stick the painting which is reproduced in the same manner onto the first moulding.
This technique can apply 1. to reproducing paintings only; 2. to reproducing frames only (which could have mirrors, paintings or prints stuck in the middle); 3. to reproducing a painting and frame as an integral unit.
Various known manufacturing and printing techniques may be used in the various stages of production. Similarly the actual plastics and inks to be used may be suitably selected from known materials.
A normal painting and/or frame reproduced by the method according to the invention could be used as a greetings or gift card, for example by folding a reproduced painting and adding a suitable message to the blank side thereof. The painting could then be subsequently unfolded by the receiver of the card and placed in the wall or otherwise mounted for display. A painting and/or frame produced by the method according to the invention could alternatively be used as part of a gramophone record cover or sleeve.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: - 1. A method of reproducing a painting and/or a frame in three-dimensional form, comprising forming a first mould from the painting and/or frame, forming a second mould from the said first mould, forming a final mould from the said second mould, and forming plastics sheet in the said final mould to reproduce the painting and/or frame.
2. A method as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the plastics sheet is vacuum formed in the said final mould.
3. A method as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the plastics sheet is pressed or embossed into the said final mould.
4. A method as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 3, comprising: a) pouring a solution over the surface of a painting and/or a frame to form a first mould, allowing the said solution to set, and releasing the mould thus formed from the painting and/or frame; b)pouring a solution over the said first mould to form a second mould, allow ing the said solution to set, and re leasing the second mould thus formed from the first mould; c) producing from the second mould a final mould; and d) forming plastics sheet in the final mould to reproduce the original paint ing and/or frame.
5. A method as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 4, wherein there is reproduced a painting and/or frame in the form of a greetings or gift card.
6. A method as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 4, wherein there is reproduced a painting and/or frame in the form of a gramophone record cover or sleeve.
7. A method according to Claim 1 of reproducing a painting and/or a frame in three-dimensional form, substantially as herein described.
8. A painting and/or a frame reproduced by the method as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 7.
