Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN TROUSERS PROVIDED WITH UNDERGARMENTS (71 I, EDWARD AMBERG of 107 Birsigstrasse, Basel, Switzerland, a Swiss citizen, do hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The present invention relates to a pair of trousers provided with an undergarment within said trousers.
A purpose of the present invention is to provide a long-legged garment to be worn under trousers, which may enable direct contact of the skin of the upper part of the legs with the material of the trousers worn over it to be avoided, particularly in hot weather.
Known types of long underpants achieve this to some extent, but they are worn primarily as an undergarment to keep the body warm in cold weather. In contrast thereto, the trousers/undergarment combination according to the invention is intended to be used in hot weather, more particularly by freely perspiring persons, to prevent contact of the wet skin with the material of the trousers, that is to say "sticking", and the accompanying unpleasant sensation.
According to the present invention, there is provided a pair of trousers provided with an undergarment within said trousers, the diameter of the legs of the undergarment being substantially equal to that of the legs of the pair of trousers, the undergarment being provided with securing elements by which it can be detachably secured to the trousers and with a cut-away portion in the upper front regions thereof interrupting the waistband.
The cut-away portion in the undergarment may be of V-shape, while further cut-away portions may also be provided.
The securing elements may be provided in the waistband region of the undergarment such that an undergarment can be easily and rapidly exchanged for a clean undergarment.
The legs of the undergarment may be of such a length that they reach substantially half-way down the calves during wear and thus enclose that part of the legs which is most affected by perspiration.
There may be provided at the lower end of each leg of the undergarment a relatively wide turn-up or hem incorporating a reinforcing insert, which is intended to ensure that the legs of the undergarment remain in shape during wear.
The undergarment is preferably made of cotton and/or man-made fibre.
The present invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one preferred form of long-legged undergarment for attachment within a pair of trousers according to the invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a pair of trousers according to the invention, the undergarment shown in Fig. 1 being shown in chain lines buttoned therein.
Referring first to Fig. 1, the long-legged undergarment 1 comprises a V-shaped cutaway portion 3 in the upper regions thereof interrupting the waistband, a plurality of buttonholes 5 around the upper seam of the undergarment and turn-ups or hems with inserts 6 formed at the lower ends of the two legs of the undergarment. The undergarment is preferably made of cotton and/or man-made fibres.
Referring now to Fig. 2, the long-legged undergarment is shown in position within a pair of trousers, the undergarment 1 being shown in chain lines. It will be seen from Fig. 2 that the lower turn-ups or hems 6 of the legs of the undergarment are well above the lower ends of the trousers, the undergarment terminating about halfway down the calf of the legs of the wearer.
The undergarment 1 is secured to a waistband 7 of the trousers by means of buttons 4 sewn on said trousers, the buttons 4 being pushed by the wearer through buttonholes 5 on the undergarment.
It should first of all be noted that in an alternative form, instead of the waistband 7 of the trousers carrying the buttons 4 and the undergarment 1 carrying the buttonholes 5, the buttons may be sewn to the undergarment and buttonholes may be provided in the lining to the waistband of the trousers. Furthermore, other forms of securing means may be used, for example, in alternative forms, one or more zip fasteners may be employed around the waistband, or sliding fasteners, or hooks and loops may be used as the securing means.
It will be seen from Fig. 2 that the diameter of the legs of the undergarment is approximately equal to that of the legs of the trousers worn over it, and therefore, the undergarment does not fit tightly against the legs. It will also be seen therefrom how easily and quickly the undergarment can be secured to and released from the trousers for the purpose of changing, and how it becomes a fixed and yet readily detachable component part of the trousers.
The trousers / undergarment combination described above provides the following advantages: a) Troublesome contact of the wet skin of a wearer with the material of the trousers is avoided and the material and the shape of the trousers are protected; b) It can be worn with or without separate underpants; c) The undergarment can even more readily be put on and taken off than known underclothing, since it requires only a single additional movement of the hand; d) The undergarment forms a component part of the trousers, due to the cut-away at the front and the attachment to the waistband.
e) Since the undergarment can be simply and rapidly exchanged and relatively cheaply produced, it is possible to have a number of such undergarments to one pair of trousers, which will be an undoubted advantage to, for example, people who travel a great deal.
f) Furthermore, the undergarment can be made in various colours so as to match the widest range of basic colour tones of the trousers.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A pair of trousers provided with an undergarment within said trousers, the diameter of the legs of the undergarment being substantially equal to that of the legs of the pair of trousers, the undergarment being provided with securing elements by which it can be detachably secured to the trousers and with a cut-away portion in the upper front regions thereof interrupting the waistband.

4. A pair of trousers according to claim 2, wherein the securing elements comprise a row of buttons on the waistband of the undergarments, and a row of buttonholes in the waistband of the pair of trousers.
5. A pair of trousers according to claim 2, wherein the securing elements comprise zip fasteners, or sliding fasteners, or loops and hooks.
6. A pair of trousers according to any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the cut-away portion is V-shaped.
7. A pair of trousers according to any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the legs of the undergarment are of such length that, in use, they reach halfway down the calves of the wearer.
8. A pair of trousers according to claim 7, wherein the lower ends of the legs of the undergarment are each turned up or are each provided with a hem incorporating a reinforcing insert.
9. A pair of trousers according to any one of claims 1 to 8 wherein the undergarment is made of cotton and/or a manmade fibre.
10. A pair of trousers provided with an undergarment within said trousers substantially as described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
