Description
(54) AEROSOL HAIR LACQUER COMPOSITION
(71) We, L'OREAL, a French Body Corporate of 14, rue Royale - 75008, Paris, France, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
The present invention relates to an aerosol hair lacquer composition, namely a pressurized sprayable aerosol hair lacquer composition.
Heretofore numerous propellants have been proposed for use in the production of aerosol hair lacquers, amongst which are principally halogenated hydrocarbons and mixtures thereof. Representative such halo enated hydrocarbons which have been used include the "Freons" (Registered Trade Mark , especially Freons 11, 12, 22 and 114. It has also been proposed to use mixtures of these materials and particularly the following mixtures: Freons 11/12, Freons 11/12/114, Freons 11/12/22, Freons 12/114, Freons 22/114 and Freons 12/22/114. It has also previously been proposed to use, as the aerosol propellant, either carbon dioxide gas or nitrous oxide but without other propellants such as halogenated hydrocarbons.
During the past few years, it has also been proposed to utilize as an aerosol propellant a mixture of certain halogenated hydrocarbons with carbon dioxide gas or nitrous oxide. The most widely employed of these are mixtures of Freon 11/12 with nitrous oxide or carbon dioxide gas or a mixture of Freon 12 with carbon dioxide gas or nitrous oxide. Although very widely used, these various aerosol propellants have not always provided complete satisfaction.
It has now been found, according to this invention, that is is possible to obtain excellent aerosol hair lacquer compositions when there is used as the aerosol propellant a mixture of "Freon 22" (monochlorodifluoromethane) and/or Freon 142b (monochlorodifluoroethane) with carbon dioxide gas or nitrous oxide. Although broadly this aerosol propellant could be categorized as a mixture of at least one "Freon" with carbon dioxide gas or nitrous oxide, the particular combination of "Freon 22" or "Freon 142b" or mixture thereof, with carbon dioxide gas or nitrous oxide has not, to our knowledge, ever been envisaged for use as an aerosol propellant in an aerosol hair lacquer composition.
This particular mixture provides excellent qualities; in particular it assures very good compatibility with a large number of cosmetic resins currently employed in the production of aerosol hair lacquer compositions. Moreover, with this propellant mixture, it is possible to obtain very fine sprays which provide excellent covering power of the hair. It is also important to note that the combination of "Freon 22" and/or "Freon 142b" with carbon dioxide gas or nitrous oxide provides significant ecologic advantages.
According to the present invention there is provided an aerosol container containing a hair lacquer composition (which must, of course, be suitable for application to hair) which composition comprises: i)at least one synthetic film-forming cosmetic resin (or polymer) capable of controlling the hair, for example by maintaining it in a desired configuration;
(ii) at least one principal solvent which is ethanol or isopropanol;
(iii) at least one auxiliary solvent in an amount from 0 to 40% by weight of said composition;
(iv) water in an amount from 0 to 20% by weight of said composition; and
(v) a propellant consisting of a mixture of (1) a monochlorodifluoromethane, mono chlorodifluroethane or a mixture thereof, in an amount of 15 to 40, preferably 20 to 35% by weight of said composition and (2) carbon dioxide gas or nitrous oxide or a mixture thereof, in an amount such as to provide in the aerosol container a total pressure of from 5 to 8 bars, preferably about 6 bars.
According to the present invention, the synthetic polymer or resin is generally present in the composition in an amount from 0.5 to 10% by weight thereof.
Representative synthetic polymers or resins which can be used in the hair lacquer composition of the present invention include:
(a) polyvinylpyrrolidone, for example that known under the name of "PVP K30" (M.W.
= 40,000) sold by GAF;
(b) copolymers of vinylpyrrolidone and vinyl acetate and especially those (i) known under the commercial names of "PVP/VA E 335, S 630 and E 535" sold by GAF, viz. E 335 - 30% vinylpyrrolidone/70% vinyl acetate, S 630 - 60% vinylpyrrolidone/40% vinyl acetate and
E535 - 50 %vinylpyrrolidone/ 50% vinyl acetate; and (ii) known under the Registered Trade
Marks "Luviskol VA 37E, VA64 and VA28I", sold by BASF, viz VA37E - 30% vinylpyr rolidone/70%vinyl acetate, VA64 - 60%vinylpyrrolidone/40%vinyl acetate and VA28I 20% vinylpyrrolidone/80% vinyl acetate;
(c) copolymers of vinyl acetate and crotonic acid, especially those sold under the commercial names of (i) "Resine 28-13-10" by National Starch, (ii) "Aresil 86.12" by Montanoir and (iii "Aristoflex C" by Hoechst; ) copolymers of methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride half-esterified with a lower aliphatic alcohol such as methanol, ethanol, butanol or isopropanol, and particularly copolymers known under the Registered Trade Marks "Gantrex ES225, ES335I and ES425" sold by GAF, viz. "ES-225" - monoethyl ester of methyl vinyl ether/maleic acid copolymer having viscosity of 3.7 cps, "ES-335I" - monoisopropyl ester of methyl vinyl ether/maleic acid copolymer and "ES425" - monobutyl ester of methyl vinyl ether/maleic acid copolymer having a viscosity of 5.1 cps;
(e) amphoteric acrylic copolymers, especially those sold under the commercial name of "Amphomer" by National Starch;
(f) vinylic terpolymers with carboxylic and acrylic ester groups, especially those sold by
Barr under the commercial names of "VEM 640 and 649";
(g) terpolymers of vinyl acetate, crotonic acid and vinyl neodecanoate, especially those sold by National Starch under the commercial name of "Resine 28.2930"; or
(h) those polymers described in the following French Patents Nos. 1,580,545; 1,584,053; and 75.09892.
Those copolymers carrying free carboxylic acid functions are generally employed in a form wherein they are neutralized to an extent of 10 to 100%with an organic base such as 2-amino -2-methyl -1,3-propanediol, 2-amino -2-methyl -1-propanol or triisopropanolamine.
It will be appreciated that while these polymers or resins have quite varied structures, nonetheless, they can all be employed in the compositions of the present invention without provoking any significant or appreciable incompatibility with the propellant mixture, which incompatibility is generally manifested by a clogging of the aerosol release valve of the container.
In accordance with the invention, the principal solvent is generally present in the hair lacquer composition in an amount from 5 to 79.5%by weight and, preferably, from 10 to 69.5% by weight.
The monochlorodifluoromethane, "Freon 22", which is used in the propellant mixture, has the chemical formula: CHC1F2; its molecular weight is about 86.475; it is a liquefied gas under pressure; it is non-flammable, non-corrosive and non-toxic; and its boiling point is -30.8 C/760mm Hg.
"Freon 142b" has the chemical formula: CH3-CC1F2; its molecular weight is about 100.5; it is a liquefied gas under pressure; it is only very slightly flammable; it is non-corrosive and non-toxic; and its boiling point is -9.8 C/760 mm Hg.
According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the aerosol hair lacquer composition includes at least one auxiliary organic solvent such as methylene chloride, trichloroethane, ethyl chloride, acetone, ethyl acetate or dichlorodinuoroethane, present in a maximum concentration of 40% by weight and preferably in an amount of 10 to 35% by weight of said composition.
The aerosol hair lacquer composition may also contain water in an amount which does not exceed 20% by weight, preferably from 0.5 to 6% by weight.
When the hair lacquer composition of the present invention contains water in an amount of 0.5 to 6%, it is also preferable to avoid the use of a chlorinated auxiliary solvent or at least to use this material in as small amounts as possible.
The aerosol hair lacquer composition of the present invention can also contain other conventional cosmetic adjuvants such as plasticizers, neutralizing agents, brightening agents, perfumes and hair dyes.
