Abstract

The construction of the lead-acid accumulator is intended to make the known attachment types possible for vehicles by means of attachment strips. The lead-acid accumulator is intended to be capable of attachment to different vehicles without further modifications. The plastic housing (2) of the lead-acid accumulator (1) is provided in the region of its base, on the side walls (4, 5, 6, 7), with in each case one attachment strip (9, 11) of integral construction. These attachment strips (9, 11) supplement one another to form a continuous attachment strip, only the edge regions being cut out. On the two narrow sides (4, 6), the attachment strips are provided centrally with a notch which is used to improve retention. The upper surface of the projecting attachment strips (9, 11) is bevelled in a roof shape. The upper surface of the attachment strip, which is bevelled in a roof shape, merges on the narrow sides (4, 6) of the housing (2) at right angles into a bevelled lower surface or supporting profile (14) of an upper attachment strip (15, 16), in each case on a narrow side (4, 6) of the housing (2). The upper surface of the upper attachment strips (15, 16) is likewise of bevelled construction and is in each case provided with a notch (12, 13) which is aligned with the notch mentioned above. <IMAGE>

Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO ACCUMULATOR CASINGS (71) We, ACCUMULATORENWERK HOPPECKE CARL ZOELLNER & SOHN, a Kommanditgesellschaft organised and existing under the laws of Germany, of Barbaros saplatz 2, 5000 Kiln, Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted us, and the method by which it is to be performed to be par ticularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to accumulator casings. Lead-acid accumulators, commonly known as "batteries" are used in vehicles to provide a steady current for lighting and ignition purposes. The present invention is concerned with a casing for such an accumulator or battery which facilitates securing the accumulator in a battery cradle of a vehicle.
According to the present invention there is provided an accumulator casing comprising a base and four upstanding walls, each wall having a lateral ridge adjacent the base and two opposite walls each having an additional lateral ridge lying above the corresponding ridge adjacent the base.
An accumulator casing embodying the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a side view, partially in section on the line I-I of Figure 2 of a lead-acid accumulator casing embodying the invention; Figure 2 is a plan view, partly - in section of the casing of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is an end view of the casing, to an enlarged scale and partially in section.
The lead-acid accumulator 1 illustrated comprises a synthetic-resin casing 2, which is provided with side walls 4, 5, 6, 7 each integral with a base 3 and each with a mounting ridge, this peripheral ridge being interrupted only at the vertical edges of the side walls. At both of the end walls 4 and 6 the corresponding mounting ridges 8 and 10 are provided centrally with an indent or recess 13 (Figure 3), which serves to facilitate mounting. The upper surface of each ridge 8, 9, 10, 11 is chamfered as can be seen in Figures 1 and 3.
The chamfered upper surface of each mounting ridge 8 and 10 lies substantially normal to a chamfered lower surface of each of a plurality of fillets 14 of an upper mounting ridge 15, 16 provided on the end walls 4 or 6 of the casing 2. The fillets 14 are of generally triangular cross-section and are triangular in side elevation as seen in Figure 1.. They serve a reinforcing purpose. Alternatively, the lower surface of each fillet is replaced by a corresponding continuous lower surface of the upper ridge 15, 16. The upper surface of each upper mounting ridge 15, 16, is chamfered as can readily be appreciated from Figure 1. The recesses 12, 13 are reproduced in the upper mounting ridges 15 and 16 so that the same reference numerals are used in Figures 2 and 3 to indicate both pairs of recesses. The ridges 15, 16 extend parallel to ridges 8, 10. The whole casing is made as an integral moulding; The arrangement of mounting ridges, indents in these ridges and the reinforcing fillets renders the casing suitable for use with a large number of battery cradles.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. An accumulator casing comprising a base and four upstanding walls, each wall having a lateral ridge adjacent the base and two opposite walls each having an additional lateral ridge Iying above the corresponding ridge adjacent the base.
2. An accumulator casing according to claim 1, wherein the additional ridges are integral with smaller walls of the casing.
3. An accumulator casing according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the ridges are integral with the remainder of the casing.
4. An accumulator casing according to claim 1, claim 2 or claim 3 wherein the additional ridges and the corresponding ridges adjacent the base are divided in two by central recesses.
5. An accumulator casing according to any one of the preceding claims wherein, the

5. An accumulator casing according to any one of the preceding claims wherein, the additional ridges have a chamfered lower surface and the upper surface of each ridge adjacent the base and facing one of the additional ridges is chamfered so that the chamfered surfaces lie substantially normal to one another.
6. An accumulator casing according to claim 5, wherein the chamfered lower surfaces of the additional ridges are formed of spaced reinforcing fillets of triangular cross-section.
7. An accumulator casing substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
