Description
(54) AN EXERCISING DEVICE
(71) We, PORTABELL KEEP FIT
SYSTEMS LTD., a British Company, of 138, Park Lane, London, W.l., do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The invention relates to improvements in and relating to an exercising device and concerns such a device of the kind which comprises a weight which is moved by a user to excercise part of his body.
According to the invention there is provided an exercising device comprising an elongate flexible holder which is adapted to be wrapped round at least part of the body to be exercised and which has means for releasably fastening the holder in position on said part of the body, and a plurality of transverse compartments each holding a weight and being defined solely by seams extending transversely to the length of the elongate holder.
The holder may be generally oblong in shape and may be made from synthetic material for example polyvinyl chloride, which may have a lining.
The fastening means may be one or more strips of a material, for example a burr fastening material such as that known as "Velcro" (Registered Trade Mark).
The fastening means may alternately comprise laces, press studs, or hooks and eyes.
Further, the holder may comprise a continuous loop of material. The fastening means for such a loop may comprise an
elasticated band or edge of the material which is adapted to grip the part of the body of the user.
The weights may comprise discrete metal particles, for example lead shot.
Alternatively the weights may comprise metal, for example lead ingots.
The weights may comprise other suitable
means (for example sand) for weighting the holder so that when worn round a part of the body and that part is moved it can be exercised.
It will be understood that the exercising device will usually be of such a size that it can be worn round an arm or leg, for example at the wrist or ankle. A sufficiently large device can however be worn round the head to exercise the neck.
In every embodiment, the fastening means may be adjustable so that the holder can be worn on different parts of the body of different circumference.
The exercising device may be put up for sale with instructions for using it and/or with a diet sheet. The instructions may be printed on one or more cards. Where there is a plurality of cards, a particular card may provide instructions for exercising a particular part of the anatomy, for example the wrist. Another card would then provide instructions for exercising a particular other part of the anatomy, for example the ankle.
It will be understood that the exercising device would generally be sold in pairs, so that they would be used in conjunction, that is each one of the pair would be placed on each wrist so that both wrists would be exercised simultaneously by the user.
The or each device may be put up for sale in a package or carrying case or box with the instructions and/or the diet sheet.
One construction of exercising device embodying the invention is diagrammatically illustrated, by way of example, in the drawing filed with the
Provisional Specification, which shows a schematic elevational view of the device prior to sealing its compartments for weights.
Referring to the drawing, the exercising device comprises an elongate holder I which is a single rectangular piece of flexible material folded approximately on its longitudinal centre line and stitched at transverse seams 2 to provide compartments or pockets 3 which are open at the upper (as viewed in the drawing) end.
In order to form a weighted exercising device a weight in the form of lead shot is placed in each compartment or pocket 3 and a flap 4 which is formed during the initial folding operation of the material is bent over to close the mouths of the compartments or pockets 3 so that the lead shot is prevented or hindered from escaping.
The flap is secured in position covering the mouths of the compartments or pockets in any suitable manner, as by stitching, adhesive, heat welding (when the flexible material is made of plastics), press stud fasteners or "Velcro".
Fastening means in the form of two pairs of strips of mating "Velcro" 5 and 6 are secured to the holder (one pair on one surface and the other pair on the opposed surface at the opposite end of the device) so that the device can easily be wrapped round a wrist or ankle of a person, secured in place on the wrist or ankle with the "Velcro", and can then be used to exercise the arm or leg of the user when he raises the arm or leg in for example successive up and down movements. The device is easily removed at the end of the exercise by disengaging the "Velcro" strips.
The large pocket beneath (as viewed in the drawing) the strips 6 may also hold a weight.
It will be appreciated that the invention may take other forms than that shown in the drawings and above described. Thus it is possible to make the exercising device in the form of a closed loop which has fastening means such as elasticated edges which grips a wrist, ankle or other part of the body for keeping the exercising device in position while an exercise is being performed.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. An exercising device comprising an elongate flexible holder which is adapted to be wrapped round at least part of the body to be exercised and which has means for releasably fastening the holder in position on said part of the body, and a plurality of transverse compartments each holding a weight and being defined solely by seams extending transversely to the length of the elongate holder.
2. An exercising device according to
Claim 1, in which the fastening means comprises press stud fasteners.
3. An exercising device according to
Claim 1, in which the fastening means comprises one or more pairs of engageable strips of a burr fastening material.
4. An exercising device according to
Claim I, in which the fastening means comprises laces which can be tied.
5. An exercising device according to
Claim 1, in which the fastening means comprises one or more sets of engageable hooks and eyes.
6. An exercising device according to any preceding Claim, in which there is a flap adapted to cover a mouth of each compartment.
7. An exercising device according to
Claim 1, in which the elongate holder comprises a continuous loop of material and the fastening means comprises an elasticated band or edge of the material which is adapted to grip the part of the body of the user.
8. An exercising device according to any preceding Claim, in which the weight comprises discrete particles of a relatively heavy material.
9. An exercising device according to
Claim 8, in which the particles are lead shot.
10. An exercising device according to
Claim 8, in which the particles are sand.
11. An exercising kit, comprising an exercising device according to any one of
Claims 1 to 10, and instructions for using the device.
12. An exercising device, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the drawing filed with the
Provisional Specification.
**WARNING** end of DESC field may overlap start of CLMS **.
