Description

(54) A METHOD OF COVERING AN END FACE OF AN INSULATING LAGGING APPLIED TO A PIPE AND A BAND OF MATERIAL FOR USE IN CARRYING OUT SAID METHOD (71) We, A/S IVINKEL, a company organised under the laws of Denmark, residing at Malv Byvej 19-23, 2760 Malov, Denmark, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates, in the process of pipe insulating, to a method of covering an end face af an insulating lagging applied to a pipe, said lagging being wrapped in a cover sheet, wherein a cover ring made from a band of material of substantially Lshaped cross-section has a first flange to extend radially in relation to the pipe, to cover the end face of the lagging, and a second flange substantially perpendicular to -the first flange.
The cover sheet wound around the lagging in order to protect said lagging against mechanical actions such as shocks and blows, can be kept together by means of bands, e.g. thin steel wire or adhesive tape. In the past, cover rings, which may also be termed pipe sleeves, have been secured in a similar manner, a flange of the cover ring, extending substantially at right angles to the flange covering the end face of the lagging, being laid as a collar over the cover sheet and fastened thereon by means of, e.g., a piece of binding wire.
This fastening of the cover ring is complicated and time consuming, and it is also material consuming, as it necessitates a certain minimum width of the flange which is to receive the binding wire. Furthermore, cover rings fastened in the known manner show a certain tendency to get loose after some time.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of covering an end face of an insulating lagging applied to a pipe, said lagging being wrapped in a cover sheet, wherein a cover ring made from a band of material of substantially L-shaped crosssection has a first flange to extend radially in relation to the pipe, to cover the end face of the lagging, and a second flange substantially perpendicular to the first flange, the second flange of the cover ring being inserted to abut the inner side of the cover sheet so that the cover ring is clamped between the cover sheet and the pipe.
One achieves thereby a simplification of the mounting operations, and fastening of the cover ring by means of a tied piece of wire can be omitted. Resilience in the band, which causes inconvenience in the known fastening where it has to be counteracted by means of a piece of wire, can be advantageously utilized in the method according to the invention. As the cover ring need not be fastened by a wire, use can be made of cover rings provided with a fastening flange narrower than the one used in the known fastening, and thus one can obtain a material saving which in practice may amount to up to 40 ,h of the consumption of material for cover rings to be fastened in the conventional manner.
According to the present invention there is also provided a band of material, for use in carrying out a method as set out in the last preceding paragraph but one, in which one flange of the band, which is to provide said first flange of a cover ring, is divided into lamellae by means of transverse cuts, and the band is resilient.
Whereas in the hitherto used cover rings it is desirable to have a band with little resilience, because resilience in the band tends to counteract the fastening outside the cover sheet by means of a binding wire, in carrying out the method of the present invention use can be made of a resilient band which, disposed as a cover ring inside the cover sheet, will tend to expand and thereby secure itself solely as a result of the friction with the inner side of the cover sheet. This frictional force can be further increased by profiling a free edge portion of the band which, when the method according to the invention is carried out, is brought into contact with the inner side of the cover sheet.
An economy of time and material can thus be achieved by use of the invention.
There now follows a description, to be read with reference to the drawings, of a method according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a cover ring made from a band of material, and Fig. 2 shows a pipe provided with a lagging wrapped in a cover sheet and with a cover ring covering the end face of the lagging.
The cover ring shown in Fig. I is made in a manner known per se by shaping a band of material into a ring with a suitable overlapping of the ends of the band piece.
The shown band has an L-shaped crosssection with a first flange 1 divided by means of transverse cuts into lamellae, so that a ring of practically any curvature can be formed, and with a second flange 3 substantially perpendicular to said flange 1, the flange 3 having a profiled portion 4 at its free edge.
A pipe 5 to be insulated, e.g. against heat dissipation, is coated with an insulating lagging 6, whereupon a cover sheet 7 is wrapped around the lagging 6 and secured by means of tape or binding wire, which is not shown, but which may be wound around the cover sheet and tied together. At the open end of the cover sheet 7 the end face of the lagging 6 is covered by means of a cover ring which is formed in the manner described above and which is mounted in such a way that the flange 3 is inserted to abut the inner side of the cover sheet 7, whereas the flange 1 extends radially in relation to the pipe and covers the end face of the lagging. The cover ring is thus clamped between the cover sheet and the pipe. The band of material for the cover ring is resilient, so that the cover ring, when, as shown in Fig. 2, it is placed at the end of a lagging 6 applied to a pipe 5, with the flange 3 which is not divided into lamellae placed on the inner side of a cover sheet 7 wrapped beforehand around the lagging 6 and secured for instance by means of adhe sive tape, will tend to expand to abut against the inner side of the cover sheet. The cover ring will thereby be secured by friction with the cover sheet, the frictional force being increased owing to the flared free edge portion 4 of the flange 3 of the cover ring. This frictional force is quite sufficient for a safe fastening of the cover ring, and it is not necessary, as in the known fastening outside the cover sheet to dispose a binding wire or the like for securing the cover ring. The cover ring is thereby also less space- and material-consuming, since the flange 3 does not have to accommodate such a wire and therefore can be made narrower than it has hitherto been possible. Its internal position gives also a better protection of the cover ring against damage.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. A method of covering an end face of an insulating lagging applied to a pipe, said lagging being wrapped in a cover sheet, wherein a cover ring made from a band of material of substantially L-shaped crosssection has a first flange to extend radially in relation to the pipe, to cover the end face of the lagging, and a second flange substantially perpendicular to the first flange, the second flange of the cover ring being inserted to abut the inner side of the cover sheet so that the cover ring is clamped between the cover sheet and the pipe.
2. A band of material for use in carrying out the method of Claim 1 in which one flange of the band, which is to provide said first flange of a cover ring, is divided into lamellae by means of transverse cuts, and the band is resilient.
3. A band of material as claimed in Claim 2, in which the other flange is profiled to provide a flared free edge portion to what is to be the second flange of a cover ring formed therefrom.
4. A method substantially as described.
5. A band of material substantially as described and shown in the drawing.
