Description
(54) TYRE VALVES
(71) I, DANTE BERETTA of 24040
Via Provinciale, Bonato Sotto, Bergamo,
Italy; an Italian National, do herebv declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: - This invention relates to a tyre valve having a plunger which is longitudinally split.
In some designs of tyre valves at present known, the sealing plunger opens for inflation only when the inflation air pressure is at a comparatively high rate, that is to say when a compressor is used. Valves of this design, which are generally mounted on motor vehicle tyres, are in some countries also installed on bicycle tyres, thus obliging a cyclist, particularly a boy or child when affected with transport breakdown to bring his bicycle to a compressor for inflation.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a valve which can be assembled and disassembled relative to the cylindrical tube of the tyre valve, wherein the plunger assures a tight seal even at a minimum internal compression and wherein inflation can be carried out without having to use such means as compressors.
According to the invention; this is achieved by providing a tyre valve comprising an internally hollow cylindrical body internally provided with a circular abutment-like projection; a plunger provided with a head-like projection that, at open position, is intended to act as a counter-abutment against said abutment, said plunger being axially movable within said cylindrical body and being split along its longitudinal axis by a cut-out extending from near the middle of its length through to the top of said head, providing a seal mounted on said plunger and means for assuring removable fastening of said valve body to a valve tube.
An embodiment according to the invention provides that the valve body is secured to the valve tube through the cooperation between an inner screw thread of the valve tube and a corresponding outer screw thread on the valve body.
Another embodiment according to the invention provides that said fastening takes place on the outside of the valve tube by means of a ring nut or the like.
These and further objects, features, details and advantages of the invention subject will become more apparent to those skilled in the art from the following brief description of an embodiment of the in
vention, given by way of unrestrictive example, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings in which;
Fig. 1 is a sectional view showing a valve with the plunger at inflation position;
Fig. 2 is a corresponding view showing the plunger at closed position; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plunger.
Referring to the drawings, reference numeral 1 denotes a valve tube which is secured to the tyre.
Reference numeral 2 denotes as a whole a valve body according to the invention which, in this case, is removably screwed in tube 1. Said body 2 internally has an annular abutment 3 and a plunger 4 is axially slidable therein having a top 5 which has a head configuration suitable to act as a counter-abutment against said abutment 3. Said plunger 4 has a bifurcating cut-out parallel to its longitudinal axis from near the middle of = its length to the top of head 5, such a cut-out being shown at 6.
During inflation operation, such a cutout affords an optimum air flow through cut-out 6, while relieving at closed posi tion the weight of said plunger 4, whereby the latter can be retained in a sealing pressed condition even with a minimum internal pressure.
As above mentioned, said body 2 could be also secured on the outside of a tube 1 by means of a ring nut or the like.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the details herein shown and/or described, but embraces all of the variants and structural equivalents embodied on the ground of the present inventive concept.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: - 1. A tyre valve comprising an internally hollow cylindrical body internally provided with a circular abutment-like projection; a plunger provided with a head-like projection that, at open position, is intended to act as a counter-abutment against said abutment, said plunger being axially movable within said cylindrical body and being split along its longitudinal axis by a cutout extending from near the middle of its length through to the top of said head, a seal mounted on said plunger and means for assuring removable fastening of said valve body to a valve tube.
2. A valve as claimed in Claim 1, characterized by having on the outside thereof a screw thread for removable fastening within said valve tube.
3. A valve as claimed in Claim 1, characterized by having means on said body for removable fastening it to the outside of said valve tube.
4. A tyre valve comprising a body and a plunger substantially as described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
5. A tyre formed with a valve according to any one of the preceding claims.
6. A cycle, i.e. bicycle, unicycle or tricycle tyre formed with a valve according to any one of claims 1 to 4 inclusive.
