Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO SELF-PROPELLED MACHINES (71) We, BENFORD LIMITED, a British Company of P.O. Box 26, The Cape, Warwick, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a Patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement.
This invention relates to self-propelled machines which may be operated by a pedestrian or by a person riding on the machine itself or on an attachment to the machine. The invention has been developed primarily in relation to motorised rollers for earth compacting or surface finishing.
When a self-propelled roller or other self-propelled machine is in use, a hazardous situation may arise. For example, during use of a pedestrian controlled. selfpropelled roller, the operator may find it necessary to walk backwards with the roller following him and the operator may walk into an obstruction. There arises a danger of the operator being crushed against the obstruction by the machine if the machine is not stopped immediately. It will be understood that pedestrian controlled. selfpropelled machines are frequently used in confined spaces and, in the case of single drum rollers, it is necessary for the operator to resist torque reaction on a handlebar of the machine, in addition to steering the machine. This requirement makes satisfactory control of the machine more difficult than it would otherwise be.
According to the present invention there is provided a self-propelled machine comprising a prime mover, power transmitting means for transmitting power from the prime mover to ground-engaging means speed and/or direction controlling means for controlling the speed and/or direction of propulsion of the machine by the prime mover, disabling means operatively associated with the power transmitting means for preventing propulsion of the machine by the prime mover and braking the machine, a first movable handle operatively connected with the speed and/or direction controlling means and a second movable handle operatively connected with the disabling means, the second handle being biased towards a first position in which the power transmitting means is disabled and the machine is braked and the second handle being movable by a user into a second position in which the prime mover can propel the machine.
A machine in accordance with the invention can be propelled by the prime mover only when the second handle is held by the operator in its second position. If a hazardous situation arises, it is merely necessary for the operator to release the second handle and this will prevent the machine from being propelled to increase the degree of hazard.
The power transmitting means preferably includes a pump driven by the prime mover, an hydraulic motor and flow and return ducts connecting the motor to the pump, and the disabling means preferably comprises a valve connected with the ducts and so arranged that when the second handle occupies its second position and the pump is driven, hydraulic fluid flows through said ducts from the pump through the motor and, when the second handle is in its first position. the flow of fluid from the pump by-passes the motor.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 shows diagrammatically a plan view of a pedestrian controlled roller according to the invention, Figure 2 shows disabling means of the roller and Figure 3 shows the disabling means in a different condition.
In Figure 1, there is illustrated diagram matically a pedestrian controlled single drum roller comprising a frame 10 and a ground-engaging drum 11. The roller is controlled by a pedestrian operator at a handlebar 12 connected to the frame 10 by way of a stem 13.
The roller is propelled by a prime mover 14 which may be, for example, an internal combustion engine. The prime mover is drivingly connected with the groundengaging drum 11 by way of an hydraulic transmission including a pump 15 and a motor 16. The pump and motor are interconnected by fluid ducts 17 to 20 and a valve block 21. The pump 15 may be a swash plate pump of which the angle and sense of the attitude of the swash plate can be set by means of a handle 22. The handle 22 is mounted on the stem 13 adjacent to the handlebar 12 and is connected with the pump by a mechanical linkage 23. Both the direction and speed of the machine can be determined by setting the handle 22. It will be appreciated that, when the machine is travelling in one direction, the ducts 18 and 20 constitute flow ducts from the pump to the motor and the ducts 17 and 19 constitute return ducts for fluid from the motor to the pump. When the machine is travelling in the opposite direction. these functions of the ducts are reversed.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3. the valve block 21 has a spool 24 which is movable along a rectilinear path within the valve block and is connected by a cable 25 to a second handle 26. this handle being mounted on the handlebar 12 of the machine. The valve block and spool constitutes the disabling means hereinbefore referred to and the spool is biased towards a first position, which is shown in Figure 2. by a compression spring 27. When the spool is in its first position. the handle 26 extends in a direction away from the handlebar at an acute angle thereto. When the handle 26 is grasped by the operator of the roller and is drawn into engagement with the handlebar 12. the spool 24 assumes the second position which is shown in Figure 3.
When the spool 24 is in the second position shown in Figure 3, the duct 18 is connected to the duct 20 whilst the duct 17 is connected to the duct 19. In this condition of the valve, the pump 15 and motor 16 are connected together so that the motor is driven at a speed and in a direction determined bv the setting of the swash plate of pump 15.
If the operator should release the handle 26, the valve spool 24 assumes its first position shown in Figure 2 and the ducts 19 and 20 are closed by lands 29 and 28 on the spool respectively. In this condition of the valve, no fluid can flow through the motor 16. Accordingly. the motor is locked and acts as a brake to prevent movement of the roller. Also when the spool 24 is in its first position, the ducts 17 and 18 are connected via a by-pass passage 30, thereby permitting the prime mover 14 and the pump 15 to continue running.
If it is necessary for the roller to be propelled manually, without its prime mover operating, the handle 26 can be pulled part of the way towards the handlebar 12 to cause the valve spool 24 to adopt an intermediate position in which communication between the ducts 19 and 20 is established by way of the by-pass passage 30. The motor 16 is then free to turn with the drum 11.
Although a transmission system of the so called "closed loop type" has been described, it will be appreciated that the invention may be applied to a transmission system in which fluid return from the motor is by way of a tank or reservoir rather than directly to the pump. Again, the invention may also be applied to a system in which speed and direction control is achieved by valves rather than by appropriate setting of a swash plate pump.
Both of the handles 22 and 26 are in the form of pivotally mounted levers. If required, a different form of handle, for example a twist grip. could be provided.

A self-propelled machine comprising a prime mover, power transmitting means for transmitting power from the prime mover to ground-engaging means, speed and/or direction controlling means for controlling the speed and/or direction of propulsion of the machine by the prime mover, disabling means operatively associated with the power transmitting means for preventing propulsion of the machine by the prime mover and braking the machine, a first movable handle operatively connected with the speed and/or direction controlling means and a second movable handle operativelv connected with the disabling means, the second handle being biased towards a first position in which the power transmitting means is disabled and the machine is braked and the second handle being movable by a user into a second position in which the prime mover can propel the machine.
