Abstract

Filter-beds.-In a filtering installation comprising a number of filter beds supplied from a common source by means adapted to afford each bed a supply proportionate to its filtering area, such as weirs with measuring notches, or the device described in Specification 3069/15, [Class 135, Valves &c.], each filter bed is provided with means for regulating the outlet in accordance with the depth of water above the bed, as described in Specification 411/12. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the. beds a receive water from a tank e over weirs d. The outlet of each bed is controlled by a valve f operated by a float g in the space above the filter, so that when the water above any filter rises, on account of the filter being choked, the corresponding outlet valve f is opened more widely. If it is undesirable that the water which should pass to one filter should be distributed among the others in the event of that filter being choked, an overflow may be arranged below the level of the weir d. If it is desired that the water passing over the weir d should not fall through an appreciable distance, an inlet chamber is provided.
