Description

(54) APPARATUS FOR COILING STRIP MATERIAL (71) We, ALFRED ADAMEC of Tschudigasse 16, 1220 Vienna, Austria and ROLAND LEDER of Alseggerstrasse 19, 1180 Vienna, Austria, both Austrian citizens, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The present invention relates to apparatus for coiling strip material comprising advancing means for the strip, a bending roller to deflect the strip advanced by the said advancing means and thereby cause it to roll up into a coil, the bending roller being shiftable transversely to the plane of the strip, and a severing device for separating the strip after formation of a coil.
Such strip-coiling apparatus is useable for drawing off a cast bar or strip from the die of a horizontal bar casting installation. Hitherto separate conveying devices have been used for the withdrawal of the strip from the die on the one hand and for the coiling of the strip on the other hand. Thus the first conveying device served to draw the strip from the die at a speed such as to achieve optimum quality and quantity of production while the second device served only for coiling the strip. In this construction the severing device was arranged between the two conveying devices and the bending roller was immediately downstream of the second conveying device. If simplification of the known apparatus is sought by using only a single pair of conveying rollers, the severing device must be downstream of the conveying rollers. If it is also downstream of the bending roller the result is that after severing of the strip there is a straight leading portion between the conveying rollers and the severing device and this portion prevents proper coiling. If the severing device is between the conveying rollers and the bending roller a similar difficulty arises and it is not possible to obtain a uniformly curved leading portion for coiling.
In accordance with the invention, in strip coiling apparatus of the type defined above the bending roller is movable between a working position immediately downstream of the advancing means and an idle position and the severing device is movable into the region of the said working position when the bending roller is removed therefrom.
Preferably the bending roller and severing device are mounted on a carriage which, for example by means of a hydraulic cylinder, is displaceable parallel to the direction of travel of the strip to move the bending roller and severing device into and out of the working position.
The advancing means may comprise a pressure roller mounted on the carriage and a driven conveyor roller engaging the side of the strip opposite to the pressure roller, the range of displacement of the carriage being approximately equal to the separation of the bending roller from the pressure roller and the severing means being downstream of the bending roller.
The carriage may be provided with clamping means for attachment of the carriage to the strip during the severing operation. The clamping means may consist of one or more pairs of clamps, operable hydraulically to engage opposite points of the strip so that the carriage travels with the strip during the severing operation.
By means of such an apparatus it is therefore possible, with a single, motor-driven conveying device, to effect both the drawingoff of the cast strip from the die and also the rolling up of the drawn off strip into the coil, without thereby obtaining undesirable long, straight leading parts of the cast strips.
An embodiment of the invention is further explained in what follows with reference to the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a schematic side elevation of an apparatus in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar side elevation in another operating position.
Fig. 3 is a detail, in side elevation, enlarged, and Fig. 4 is an elevation and partially a section on the line A-A of Fig. 3.
On a machine frame 1 there are arranged above the cast strip 20 two hydraulically or pneumatically drivable conveyor rollers 2, 3 and below the strip two non-driven pressure rollers 4, 5, the rollers 2 and 3 co-operating with the rollers 4 and 5, respectively. Further there is arranged under the strip 20 a hydraulically or pneumatically vertically shiftable bending roller 6. Additionally there is provided on the frame 1 a longitudinal slide or carriage 8 which is displaceable in the direction of the strip by means of a hydraulic cylinder 7, which carries the pressure roller 5 and the bending roller 6 and which, Further.
more, is equipped with a transverse slide 9 on which a severing tool, for example a saw disc 11, together with a drive motor, is provided. The transverse slide 9 can be displaced across the strip by an associated hydraulically-operable advance and retract cylinder 10. Further there are provided on the slide 8 a clamping device 16 (Figs 3 and 4).
for firm connection with the cast strip 20 of the longitudinal slide 8 which carries the severing device 11 and on the frame 1 two rollers 12 for the support of the rolled-up coil, as well as guide rollers 13 and 14 lying against the sides of the latter and a roller track 15 connected to the apparatus for the reception of severed coils.
By arranging the bending roller 6 and the severing device 11 on the longitudinal carriage 8 the possibility is obtained of effecting the engagement of the bending roller 6 and also the severing of the strip directly behind the conveying roller 3, whereby the straight end stub of the strip can be kept very short in the manner required for the rolling up of a fresh coil.
The working procedure is as follows: At the commencement of casting the slide 8 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, but the bending roller 6 remains in the lowered position until a leading edge of the cast strip 20 has left the pair of rollers 3 and 5, so that the cast strip is gripped by this conveying device. As soon as this is the case, the leading edge is displaced by raising the bending roller 6 into position so that the coiling begins.
After reaching the desired coil weight, which for example is reached with five to ten turns of the cast strip, the bending roller 6 is again lowered to the level of the pressure roller 5, whereupon the coil rolls out onto the roll track 15. After the lowering of the bending roller 6 the longitudinal slide 8 is driven by the hydraulic cylinder 7 into the severing position of Fig. 2, whereby the severing device 11 comes to lie directly behind the conveyor roller 3 and the bending roller 6 comes to lie generally opposite the conveyor roller 3. The drawing-off of the strip continues thereby unaltered. As soon as the desired length of the straight end piece is reached, the longitudinal carriage is automatically by means of a limit switch or by means of a photo-electric trip switch attached forcibly to the cast strip 20 through the clamping devices 16 (visible in Figs 3 and 4), the severing device 11 is set in operation by energising its drive motor, and the transverse slide is put in motion by loading the associated hydraulic advance cylinder 10. Thus the strip is severed.
Through the clamping of the longitudinal slide 8 to the cast strip, the severing device 11 follows the intermittent movement of the cast strip during the cutting operation. As soon as the cast strip has been severed, the motor of the severing device is switched off, the transverse slide 9 is retracted, the clamping devices 16 are opened, and the coil with its straight strip end is advanced by a roller drive to the end position of the roller track 15 shown in Fig. 1 at the right. At the same time the longitudinal slide 8 is returned by means of the hydraulic cylinder 7 to its starting position according to Fig. 1. Thereupon the renewed rolling-up of the strip in the described manner-can be begun.
For clarification it is remarked that the pair of rollers 2, 4, which is coupled directly with the pair of rollers 3, 5 only serves to assist the pair of rollers3, 5, and fundamentally is not necessary.
