Abstract

In the case of an electrical ciruit board which is produced from a perforated insulating-material board (1), has two main conductors (2, 3) (which are arranged on two parallel edges) and has branches (4, 5) which run at right angles thereto and form a pattern consisting of relatively large and relatively small areas (6, 7), the rows of holes between the branches are likewise covered with electrically conductive layers (11, 11a, 12, 12a, 13, 13a) so that further conductors, for the connection of further components, are created between the normal conductors which are used. <IMAGE>

Description

(54) A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (71) 1, IB OBEL PEDERSON, of 7 Lerhöj, 2880 Bagsvärd, Denmark, a Danish national, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a printed circuit board of rectangular shape and of insulating material which is perforated in accordance with a standard matrix and provided with strip-like conductive coatings.
Such printed circuit boards are a standard commodity which are intended to receive components or sockets thereof, which are provided with a variable number of socket pins which fit into the holes of the circuit board.
It is an object of the invention on the one hand to provide a better utilisation of space on printed circuit boards and to permit a more expedient wiring arrangement.
According to the present invention there is provided a printed circuit board comprising a rectangular panel of insulating material which is perforated in accordance with a standard matrix pattern and provided with strip-shaped conductive coatings, one of which at least being so arranged that in its given medial line a row of holes is located, whereby the conductive coatings include: two principal conductors extending along opposing edges of the board; a plurality of tracks extending at right angles from each of the two principal conductors, and which are arranged symmetrically in such a manner that between them areas of two different sizes having a different number of rows of holes extending at right angles to the principal conductors are formed; and in each of the larger areas at least two groups of coatings extend parallel to the principal conductors over at least two holes and in their longitudinal extension are separated by at least one hole of a row of holes extending at right angles to the principal conductors; and further conductive coatings provided extending parallel to the tracks extending from the principal conductor and between the coating groups of the larger areas and/or located in the smaller areas formed between the tracks each of said further coatings extending over at least two holes.
Preferably, the two groups of coatings in the larger areas are separated in a longitudinal direction by at least two rows of holes, and on at least two of these rows a corresponding number of coatings extending parallel to the tracks and separated from one another in longitudinal direction and so arranged that one row is located offset to the adjacent row or rows in the longitudinal direction.
The invention will be described further by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the single figure shows a circuit board.
A circuit board 1 of insulating material shown in the drawing has a rectangular shape and is provided with a matrix of holes which are arranged in rows parallel to the edges of the board at a standard spaced relationship with one another, according to which standard (metric or British) the board has been produced. Along two opposite edges of the panel, conductive strips 2 and 3 are provided which may be connected to any number of contact lamella 14 located along the board edge at right angles thereto.
Each of the strips 2, 3 acts as main conductors, one intended for connection to the positive pole of a voltage source and the other for connection to the negative pole or to earth.
From the conductive strips 2, 3 conductive tracks 4 and 5, respectively, extend at right angles which are arranged in such a manner as to define alternately a small area 6 and a large area 7 therebetween. The tracks 4, 5 each extend along one of the rows of holes at right angles to the principal conductors 2, 3 and located therebetween in the smaller areas 6 is a single row 8 of holes and in the larger areas 7, eight rows of holes 91 to 9s.
In the larger areas 7 two groups of conductive coatings 10 are provided which extend parallel to the principal conductors 2, 3 across the three rows 91 to 93 or 96 to 96 of holes located next to the tracks 4 and 5 and hence leave the fourth and fifth rows 94 and 9; of holes exposed. This arrangement corresponds to a known embodiment.
In accordance with the invention a number of separate conductive coatings 11 or 12 are provided which extend parallel to the tracks 4, 5 and each extend over three holes, except for one of the coatings ila and 12a of each row located adjacent the principal conductive strips 2, 3. This one coating 1 lea or 12a extends only over two holes, and the two coatings 1 la, 12a are located at opposite- ends of the adjacent rows, so that the coatings 11 are offset, in a longitudinal direction, relative to the coatings 12.
Furthermore, along the row of holes of the smaller areas 6 a single row of corresponding conductive coating 13 are provided which extend parallel to the tracks 4, 5 over three holes, apart from the coating 1 3a at one end of each row which only extends over two holes.
The conductive coatings 11 to 13 described are particularly suitable for the connection of discrete components, such as resistors or capacitors which are to be connected to integrated circuits which in known manner are connected to the coatings 10. For such discrete components it was hitherto necessary to use coatings 10 and hence to occupy a part of the circuit board which would have been usable for integrated circuits.
The end areas D and E of the circuit board described may be arranged in a variety of manners and do not constitute a part of the invention Moreover, the reverse side of the panel may possibly be provided with conductive coatings in different patterns to those described.
