Description

(54) METHOD OF ASSEMBLING AN 'O' RING ON A CYLINDRICAL COMPONENT AND APPARATUS THEREFOR (71) We, ARMITAGE SHANKS GROUP LIMITED, a British Company, of Armitage, Staffordshire, England, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a method of assembling an '0' ring on a cylindrical component and apparatus therefor.
More specifically the invention provides for apparatus whereby an '0' ring can be automatically assembled on to an external diameter of a component and thereby minimise the possibility of accidental damage to the '0' ring during manipulation.
The apparatus is suitable for use in an automatic assembly machine when an 'O' ring is to be mounted on an external diameter of a component, the '0' ring being axially aligned with the component and then expanded in diameter before being loaded over the component and then expanded in diameter before being loaded over the component on a mandrel and then placed in position on the component.
According to one aspect of the invention a method of assembling an '0' ring on to a cylindrical component comprises the steps of locating an '0' ring in an '0' ring nest formed in convergent faces of jaw members slidably mounted in a block and biased in a direction so as to converge on a common centre, locating a cylindrical component axially in a component nest coaxial with said common centre and adjacent one side of the block locating telescopic mandrel means axially with said common centre adjacent the other side of the block, inserting the mandrel means through a through aperture in the block co-axial with said common centre so as to move the jaw members radially and receive and expand the '0' ring and to engage the free end of the mandrel means on the end of the com ponent, moving the mandrel means further through said through aperture to telescopically retract an inner member of the mandrel means, and further moving the mandrel means so that an intermediate annular member of the mandrel means slides over the component to engage an abutment surface of the component nest and is then retracted into the mandrel means until an abutment shoulder on the mandrel means slidably removes the '0' ring from the mandrel means as the '0' ring retracts on to the component.
According to another aspect of the invention '0' ring assembly apparatus for performing the method of assembling an '0' ring on to a cylindrical component comprises, a block having a centrally disposed through aperture, telescopic mandrel means locatable adjacent and on one side of the block co-axial with said through aperture and a component nest locatable adjacent the opposite side of the block and having means for axially receiving a cylindrical component therein co-axial with said through aperture, said block having a plurality of jaw members mounted therein and for sliding movement between a converged position where the jaw members converge on a common centre co-axial with said through aperture where faces of the jaw members mate and an open position where the jaw members are moved radially outwardly from said common centre, a slot formed on each of the convergent faces of the jaw members forming a nest for an '0' ring co-axial with said common centre, means for biasing the jaw members into said converged position, said mandrel means comprising a hollow outer tubular member coaxial with an intermediate hollow tubular member and an inner cylindrical member all telescopically slidable relative to each other from an extended position in which the end of the inner member extends beyond the end of the intermediate member which extends beyond the end of the outer member to a retracted position in which the inner and intermediate members are retracted into the outer member, the end portions of the members in their extended position forming a frusto-conical surface and the free end of the outer member forming a shoulder abutment for said '0' ring, said mandrel means being movable through the through aperture for axial engagement with a component located in the component nest.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a sectional side view of the appartus according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of a base block forming part of the apparatus of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a part sectional view of the apparatus of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings apparatus for assembly of an '0' ring on a cylindrical component consists of a block denoted generally at 1, having a centrally disposed through aperture 2, and a plurality of jaw members 3 slidably mounted therein so as to be convergent on a common centre 4 co-axial with the through aperture 2.
The convergent faces 5 of the jaw members 3 are each provided with a slot which together form a nest 6 for an '0' ring 7 when the jaw members are in their converged position. The jaw members also have mating faces 8 which mate with adjacent jaw members when the jaw members are in their converged position. A radially directed passage 9 for loading the '0' ring 7 into the nest 6 is also provided in the block.
Each of the jaw members are held together in their converged position and mating faces in contact by bias means indicated generally at 10 comprising an adjustable guide rod 11 secured at one end to the jaw member and extending radially of the common centre from the jaw member and spring means 12 coiled about the guide rod and engaging the jaw member and an adjustable abutment member 13 mounted in the block.
Mandrel means indicated generaly at 15 are positioned axially above the common centre of the block 1 for expanding, loading and placing the '0' ring on a component indicated generally at 16.
The mandrel means 15 consists of an outer tubular member 17 which is hollow, an intermediate hollow tubular member 18 telescopically slidable within the outer member 17 and an inner cylindrical member 19 telescopically slidable within the intermediate member 18.
The free end 20 of the inner member 19 extends beyond the free end 21 of the intermediate member 18 and the free end of the intermediate member extends beyond the free end 22 of the outer member 17 when in their normally extended position as illustrated in Fig. 1, and are slidably retractable relative to each other to a retracted position in which the inner and intermediate members are located within the outer member.
In their normally extended position the three members 17, 18 19, form a frustoconical surface the angle of taper being in the region of 15 to 25 but ideally the angle of taper is around 20 and the convergent faces 5 of the jaw members are angled to be complementary to the taper of the mandrel means 15 and the tips 23 of the convergent faces of the jaw members adjacent the component nest have a radius equal to the outer radius of the outer member 17 of the mandrel means 15.
The free end 22 of the outer member of the mandrel means 15 is cut-off to form a shoulder abutment for the '0' ring 7 and to provide a parallel diameter portion 24 on the intermediate member 18 below the free end 22 of the outer members A component nest 25 is provided adjacent the side of the base block opposite the mandrel means.
The component nest 25 provides for positioning and holding, in axial alignment with the common centre, the cylindrical component 16 to which an '0' ring is to be assembled, the component 16 has an 'O' ring seat 26 in the form of an annular recess adjacent its end and a surface 27 on the component nest located adjacent the seat 26 in the component forms an abutment member for the end of the mandrel means 15.
To ensure smooth travel of the '0' ring up the tapered surfaces of the mandrel means 15 a lubricant spray (not shown) is provided adjacent the mandrel means to spray lubricant on to the mandrel means.
The method of operating the apparatus is that the '0' ring 7 is inserted into the '0' ring nest 6 in the jaw members and the mandrel means 15 having been sprayed with a lubricant is inserted into the through aperture 2 in the block thereby forcing the jaw members 3 apart so that the '0' ring is removed from nest 6 on to and up the tapered end portion of the mandrel means to be deposited on the parallel diameter portion of the mandrel means at the shoulders 22. The inner member 19 of the mandrel means abuts the end of the component 16 in the component nest and the intermediate member 18 enshrouds the end of the component 16 and comes to rest on the abutment members 27 of the component nest 25 while the outer member continues its travel to push the '0' ring 7 off the parallel diameter portion of the intermediate member where the '0' ring contracts causing it to move down the tapered portion of the intermediate member and into position on the component after which the mandrel means is withdrawn.
