Abstract
155,870. Knight, A. W. Aug. 2, 1919. Renewable calks. -Shoes for animals, with renewable wearing-surfaces, of the kind provided w i t h grooves running from end to end in their outer surfaces designed to receive metal wearing-strips of a depth equal to or greater than the depth of the grooves, have both sides of the groove or grooves inclined towards the outside of the shoe, and the wearing-strips are provided with inclined or recessed sides so that the walls of the grooves may be hammered over to fix the strips in position. The shoe a is made from bar metal having rectangular grooves b, c and also a V-groove d, the metal strips being provided with inclined or recessed sides as shown in Fig. 9. In securing the strips, the V-groove allows the walls of the other grooves to be punched into the recess formed in the wearing-strips. In a hind shoe, the strips i are formed staple-shaped as shown in Fig. 12. In practice, one lower corner of the wearing strip is rounded to facilitate insertion, and one end is cut away to receive a " tommy " when renewing the strip. In frosty weather, the road-contacting surface of the strip may be sharpened.
