Abstract

154,962. Powers, J. Aug. 5, 1919. Machines for coding and decoding; keyboard operators.-A typewriter is adapted for writing in code or decoding, by providing a rotatable keyboard operator which carries a set of characterkeys corresponding with the character-keys of the typewriter and is turned to change the code. In the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the keyboardoperator 1 is mounted to rotate about a vertical axis and is supported by a base 6 which is provided with parts 5 for supporting the typewriter 2. The keyboard-operator comprises discs 10, 12 which are connected by bolts 13 and a shaft 19 mounted in a bearing 8, the disc 12 being supported by balls 22 arranged in a race 9. The keyboard-operator is provided with plunger-keys 11 which are arranged in a circle and operate levers 28 connected by links 27 to the key-levers 4, the upturned ends 30 being arranged in a circle and underneath the plungerkeys. The disc 10 is provided with a depending rim 17 which forms a continuation of a stationary rim 24, the two rims being formed with symbols, for example, numbered graduations 25, 26, for indicating the code-key. The disc 12 is formed as a worm-wheel engaging a worm 14 which is operated by a crank 15. Locking-devices.-To prevent unauthorized use of the apparatus, the crank 15 may be formed with a key for engaging a barrel-lock in the worm 14. A seal 35, Fig. 4, may be applied to the bottom of the shaft 19 to prevent tampering.
