Abstract

Crank-actuated pumps; stroke, varying; revolving-cylinder pumps. -Apparatus for the hydraulic transmission of power, comprising a variable-capacity pump supplying one or more hydraulic machines, is provided with hand or ordinary means for adjusting the pump capacity, and in addition with means actuated by the pressure in the system, when it exceeds a predetermined value, to limit the delivery at which the hand control can set the pump, the pressure-actuated means comprising a piston or equivalent variably loaded by compressed air or gas, springs, weights, &c. In the form illustrated in Fig. 1, the pressure acts on a piston 1 connected to a larger piston 4 acted on by compressed air contained in a cylinder 5, and the pump control rod 13 is linked to a lever 10 connected to the piston 1 and to a hand lever 15. The cylinder 5 is provided with a hole 19 so disposed that the desired initial air pressure is obtained when the cylinder is screwed home against the shoulder 7. If desired, the cylinder 5 may be filled with liquid and provided with an open pipe 11<a>. In other forms, the piston 1 is moved against the action of springs to operate the lever 10, to move its fulcrum or to adjust the position of the stops between which the hand lever 15 works. In a further modification, the pump control rod 30, Fig. 7, is provided with washers 37 and a spring 20 disposed in a cylinder 38 slidable in the pump casing, the cylinder cap being connected to the lever 10, which is linked to the pump casing and to the control 15. In this case, the spring 20 yields to allow the track 36 to move towards its central position on the attainment of predetermined pressure.
