Abstract

The bleaching sequences, if appropriate combined with a partial chlorination, start with an alkaline peroxide digestion. In the peroxide stage, the pulp having an alkali content of 0.5-3% by weight, calculated as 100% pure substance and relative to absolutely dry pulp, is bleached at a bleaching liquor temperature of at least 65 DEG C. The process can be carried out unpressurised and hence in simple equipment and allows complete bleaching even of hard pulps. Up to 90% of the substances polluting the effluent are dissolved out by the alkaline peroxide treatment, so that the receiving water course is not polluted thereby. As compared with hitherto conventional processes, about half the quantity of alkali and at most 1/5 of the quantity of chlorine are required. The effluent arising is non-corrosive and can easily be regenerated.
