Abstract

Sulphuric acid.-In treating a liquid with a heated gas, for evaporating, concentrating or dehydrating the liquid, and for producing chemical reactions, the gas is heated above the boiling- point of the liquid and is forced through porous plates 2 which may be formed of a sintered silicious material termed " filtros " and which form the base of a liquid-containing vessel. The gas enters the liquid in a very finely-divided form, and rises therein without raising it to its boiling- point. In purifying and concentrating sludge acid obtained in treating mineral oils with sulphuric acid, air or other gas is heated to about 1000‹ F. and compressed into the chamber 3 to a pressure of 2 lbs. per sq. in. The air passes through the porous plates 2 and rising through the sludge acid removes water and acts upon the hydrocarbons to form volatile saturated hydrocarbons and residual carbon which can be removed from the acid. Sulphuric acid of 40‹ BÚ may be concentrated to acid of 64‹ BÚ by passing through it the products of combustion of fuel oil which have a temperature of 1200-1400‹ F. The temperature of the acid rises to about 249‹ F. The porous plates 2 may be formed of electric-insulating material.
