Toothed wheels; racks.-Toothed, spur, helical and worm wheels are rendered resilient by inserting a solid or inflated ring or rings of soft and elastic material such as rubber, leather &c. between the rim and the centre or hub portion, the drive being transmitted by the frictional grip between the parts. In one form, the rim and teeth are so proportioned as to be flexible in themselves. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the toothed rim 1 is connected to the centre 2 by means of two inflated tubes 3, 4 enclosed in covers 5, 6, each formed in two parts, the joints being disposed in planes parallel to the plane of the wheel. The gaps between the rim 1 and centre 2 are closed by rings 7 and 8, fixed to the centre 2. In the form shown in Fig. 2, solid conical rings 24, 25 of rubber are gripped between the inner conical surfaces on the rim and fixed and movable surfaces 27, 28 drawn together by bolts 31 on the centre 26. In a modification of this form, a single centre carries two toothed rims similar to that shown in Fig. 2, the intermediate seating being provided by a double conical ring inserted between the fixed and movable rings 27, 28. In the form shown in Fig. 4, a cylindrical rubber ring 53 is pressed outwardly against the toothed rim 52 by a pair of tapered tightening rings 55, 56 bearing against conical surfaces on the centre disk 54 and drawn together by bolts 57, metallic plates 58 of the form shown in Fig. 5 being interposed between the ring 58 and the sliding rings 55, 56. The parts may be of cylindrical formation only, the rubber ring being cast round a base ring and the toothed rim shrunk on to the rubber ring, the composite rim thus formed being hydraulically pressed on the wheel centre. In this form the rim and teeth may be proportioned as shown in Fig. 7 so as to be flexible under the torque of the driving gear 66. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also that the invention is applicable also to toothed racks. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
