Abstract

1537101 Electromedical leads MEDTRONIC INC 5 Feb 1976 [7 Feb 1975] 04605/76 Heading A5R A body implantable electromedical lead particularly for a heart pacer, has at least one electrically conductive electrode 4 or 5 with at least the body tissue exposed surface thereof formed from a material which is substantially inert to living body tissue and fluids and is non-thrombogenic, and an electrical conductor 2 or 3 connected to the electrode and encapsulated in non-thrombogenic, non-fibrotic, electrically insulating material 1. A bipolar endocardial stimulation lead, comprises coil spring conductors 2, 3 respectively connected to a ring electrode 4 and a tip electrode 5. A flange, tine or other mechanical lodging formation 6 may be provided on the encapsulation to facilitate retention of the electrodes in the desired position. The encapsulation material 1 may be silicone rubber with powdered tungsten incorporated therein, or a polysiloxane-polyurethane block copolymer coating over extruded polyether urethane tubing. Each electrode 4, 5 may be made entirely of hard pyrolytic carbon, or a coating of this material may be applied over platinum or platinum-iridium alloy or on a graphite substrate. A protective coating of serum albumin may be provided over each electrode, such coating dissolving in use of the lead.
