Abstract

1536866 Thread machining HORSTMANN GEAR CO Ltd 15 Oct 1976 [15 Oct 1975] 42107/75 Headings B3K and B3D A method of forming a helical thread of constant pitch on a frusto-conical workpiece, in which the workpiece 8 is rotated about axis y relative to a machining head 10 carrying a grinding or milling wheel 11 rotating about axis z inclined to the axis y at the helix angle, is characterized in that as relative axial traverse between the workpiece 8 and the wheel 11 takes place along axis y, the machining head 10 is pivoted about axis x, perpendicular to axis y, to apply a correction to the helix angle to ensure a constant pitch along the frusto-conical workpiece. The correction may be applied mechanically by an arm 16 attached to the machining head 10 engaging an inclined cam, or electronically (Fig. 5, not shown) in which a signal from a linear transducer (27) (28) representative of the relative axial feed controls via a control unit (25) a servo-motor (21) which rotates the machining head 10. A feed back signal from a further transducer (23), (24) representative of the angular adjustment of the machining head 10 is also fed to the control unit (25). The helix angle correction can either be set manually on a digital setting control (29) or the control unit (25) can be linked with a computer programme.
