1536821 Photovoltaic generators D S STREBKOV V V ZADDE V A UNISHKOV T A LITSENKO and D V NEKLJUDOVA 4 March 1977 09343/77 Heading H1K A photovoltaic generator comprises a photovoltaic semiconductor device 1 having a rectifying junction 8 formed either between semiconductor regions 6 and 7 of opposite conductivity types or between a semiconductor region and a Schottky metal contact, at least two current collector contacts 5, 11 and a protective area 2 including incident radiation transmitting elements 12 and intermediate layers 14 arranged between adjacent elements 12 to absorb damaging radiation 15. The elements which may be in the form of parallelepipeds, Figs. 3,4 (not shown), are typically of glass with silver coated sides, and are connected by solders or adhesives to the intermediate lead layers 14. For maximum efficiency, the thickness of the device does not exceed the diffusion length of the photogenerated minority carriers. In one example, the protective cover 2 comprises discrete photovoltaic semiconductor converters with intervening absorbing layers 14 which also serve as current collectors; and the photovoltaic device includes discrete, electrically interconnected photovoltaic elements arranged side by side with intervening current collectors 5, 11 and having their rectifying junctions orthogonal to the radiation receiving surface 3. The band-gap of the converters of the cover is greater than that of the device 1 so as to transmit a part of the incident radiation to the device. In the embodiments of Figs. 11, 12 (not shown) an electric field maintained adjacent the radiation receiving surface 3 produces an inversion region 3 orthogonal to the rectifying junction in the semiconductor body. The protective cover 2 of Fig. 18 comprises a bundle of glass strips 12 diverging like a fan adjacent the surface 3, the strips being bonded to each other and to the device 1 by the absorbing layers 14 which also act as current collectors. The photovoltaic device 1 in one example, Fig. 20 (not shown) comprises individual converted elements made of different semiconducting elements so as to be responsive to different parts of the spectrum and the incident radiation is conducted to each of them by a light conducting strip 12.
