Abstract

1536096 Producing copper rod and coated magnet wire SOUTHWIRE CO 13 June 1977 [16 June 1976] 24512/77 Heading B3A A method of producing copper or copper alloy rod comprising continuously casting molten copper or copper alloy into bar, hot-rolling the bar into continuous rod, hot-coiling the rod and subsequently cooling the coiled rod to room temperature to permit precipitation of nominal impurities and lowering of the recrystallization temperature of the rod. The coiling is carried out in the range 700‹ to 1200‹ F., preferably 950‹ to 1150‹ F. The rod is cooled at a rate not exceeding 300‹ F. per minute. The recrystallization temperature is sufficiently lowered to permit annealing at 500‹ F. Magnet wire may be formed by drawing the rod into wire and passing it through an annealing tower containing a molten enamelling compound at a temperature of approximately 500‹ F. so as to simultaneously anneal the wire. Apparatus for forming the rod includes a delivery device 10 for molten copper and a pouring spout 11 adjacent a peripheral groove on a rotary mould ring 13. A cooling system includes headers 17, 18, 19 disposed on the side of the mould ring and headers 20, 21 disposed either side of a metal band 14 to effect solidification of the metal. A cast bar 25 is fed via a conveyer to a rolling mill 28 which produces a continuous length of rod 30 of circular crosssection which is fed to a coiler 31. After hotcoiling the rod is delivered to a cooling station.
