Abstract

1535766 Displacement transducers UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CARDIFF 17 Dec 1976 [20 Dec 1975] 52258/75 Headings G1A and G1N A displacement transducer comprises a spring strip 20 fixed at one end to a block 19 with the other end resting on the surface of a four-lobe cam 16 mounted on a spindle 14 together with a wheel 15. A body whose displacement is to be measured rotates the wheel 15 and thus the cam 16 to produce sequential flexing of the spring strip, which is sensed by strain gauges 22 bonded to its surface and connected in a bridge network. The number of output cycles from the bridge provides a coarse displacement signal, and the amplitude of the signal in each cycle provides a fine displacement signal. The lobes on the cam may be sensed by a proximity detector. In another arrangement the displacement of the wheel 15 is sensed by a disc rotating in synchronism with wheel 15 to vary the optical, electric, or magnetic coupling between two parts of a transducer, one part of which may be a Hall plate or magnetosensitive element.
