Abstract

1535318 Rotary couplings TWIFLEX COUPLINGS Ltd J STEWART and R C STEVENS 26 Feb 1976 [3 March 1975] 8808/75 Heading F2G A coupling for transfer of fluid under pressure from an inlet passage 39 in an outer stationary annulus 18 and a passage 38 in an inner annular rotating hub 12, comprises an annular abutment 14 on the hub facing an end flange 16 thereon to define surfaces with which sealing rings 34, 35 engage and between which is located the annulus 18, the annulus being formed from two relatively axially movable parts, a body member 43 and a thrust ring 47, seals 53, 55 disposed in grooves 52, 54 sealing off the space defined between the surface 50 on the ring 47 and a step 45 on the member 43, this space being connected by a branch passage 51 to the inlet passage 39, so that when fluid under pressure is supplied to the inlet passage 39, the member 43 and ring 47 are forced axially apart causing the sealing rings 34, 35 to seal against the abutment 15 and flange 16 and thereby prevent leakage of fluid. Springs (not shown) surrounding bolts carried by the member 43 retract the member 43 and thrust ring 47 slightly when no fluid is supplied to lessen wear on the sealing rings. The hub 12 rotates on a bearing 21.
