Abstract

1535132 Porous member YOKOHAMA GOMU KK NIHON CEMENT KK and ASANO POLE KK 7 Feb 1977 04917/77 Headings C1H and C1A [Also in Division B5] A porous member comprises a hardened inorganic binder, and has open cells whose volume is each from 0.52 to 4,200 mm.<SP>3</SP> and whose interconnection coefficient is 0À5 to 15%, the ratio of the apparent density of the member to the density of the binder being from 0À15:1 to 0À5:1. The member may be produced by compressing particles of a resilient elastic organic material in a mould so that some spaces remain between the particles or placing precompressed particles of the resilient elastic organic material having some spaces between the particles in a mould, filling the spaces between the particles with an inorganic binder, the volume ratio of the inorganic binder to the particles being from 1.5:1 to to 4:1, curing the inorganic binder until it has at least partially hardened, releasing the product from the mould, and reducing the volume of the particles by heating or by dissolution in a solvent. The organic material may be polystyrene or polyethylene. In Examples 1 to 6 porous members are prepared from Portland cement, sand, water, air-entrained agent and foamed styrene beads (or sticks), in Example 7 from α-alumina, foamed styrene beads and water, and in Example 8 from foamed styrene beads, cement, fly ash, water and water-reducing agent.
