Abstract

1534762 Non-woven fabric BAYER AG 21 Jan 1976 [23 Jan 1975 (2)] 02296/76 Heading D1R A base material for artificial leather comprises a fibre fleece impregnated with a rubber latex and has a water vapour absorption capacity of 2 to 8% by weight, a tensile strength of 30 to 250 kp/cm<SP>2</SP> and an elongation at break of 30 to 150%. The fleece may be a needled and shrunk fleece of polyamide, polyester, polypropylene, viscose rayon. It is impregnated with a latex comprising rubber, a heat sensitiser, a vulcanisation paste and an inert expanding agent, the mixture coagulated at 25 to 80‹C and vulcanised with steam at 100 to 200‹C and the impregnated fleece dried, split and provided with a thin microporous polyurethane layer. The rubber may be natural rubber or a carboxylated or non carboxylated synthetic rubber based on a copolymer of butadiene with acrylonitrile, styrene or an acrylic ester or chloroprene, isoprene or copolymers thereof. The polymer may contain amide groups or N-methylol acrylamide. The heat sensitiser may be polyvinyl methyl ether, polyethylene and polypropylene oxide adducts and/or their co-adducts, a polyalkyl or polyaryl substituted polyether siloxane or an ethylene diamine polyether adduct. The vulcanisation paste preferably comprises 0.5 to 10 parts (by weight) zinc oxide, 0.2 to 10 parts sulphur, 0.2 to 3 parts water-soluble accelerator, 0.2 to 3 parts water insoluble accelerator, 2 to 15 parts titanium dioxide (as filler), 0.1 to 5 parts dispersing agent and 10 to 50 parts water. 10 to 100 parts paste are mixed with 100 parts rubber (based on the weight of dry substance). The water soluble (and therefore quick acting) accelerator is the ammonium, alkali or alkaline earth salt of dimethyl, diethyl, diisopropyl or dibutyl dithiocarbamic acid, optionally combined with a salt of mercaptobenzothiazole. The water insoluble accelerator is selected from the zinc salts of the above mentioned dithiocarbamic acids, zinc mercaptobenzothiazole and bis (dimethylthiocarbamyl) disulphide. The expanding agent may be selected from silicone oil, stearyl isocyanate, perfluorinated stearic acid, polyvinyl methyl ether, a mixture of a polyether siloxane with polyethylene or an expoxide resin or a condensate of a N-methylolated melamine, urea or cyclic urea with a fatty acid, amide, alcohol or amine, e.g. the condensate of hexamethylolated melamine with behemic acid.
