Abstract

1534143 Storing and retrieving magnetic tape cassettes H NEUHAEUSSER 24 Nov 1975 [22 Nov 1974] 48134/75 Heading B8W [Also in Division G5] Magnetic tape cassettes are retained on inclined supports 2 of respective storage compartments by engagement of each cassette with a respective locking pawl 3 which is retained in the locking position by an armature of a respective solenoid 6, energization of a solenoid 6 releasing the corresponding pawl 3 which is then pushed by the corresponding cassette to a release position as the cassette slides on the support 2 under gravity and out of its compartment into a supply duct, the pawl 3 thereafter returning to the locking position under the action of gravity thereon. Rows and columns of cassettes are arranged in two opposed assemblies, with the columns having partitions 14 therebetween which also define the supply ducts leading to transducing stations. Each pawl 3 is at one end of a lever 7, 9 pivoted at 8 and having its other end engaged with the armature of the corresponding solenoid 6. The locking lever 7, 9 and release solenoid 6 for each cassette, except the top one in each column, is located within the inclined cassette-support structure for the cassette above. To protect the magnetic recordings, each solenoid 6 is located in a housing of magnetically soft, high permeability material, and levers 7, 9 are non- magnetic and located in Permalloy housings which form the inclined supports. Partitions 14 are electrically insulated from each other and are each divided at 12 into two halves, each half-partition forming one electrical lead to each solenoid 6 of a corresponding column, horizontal bus-bars 17 forming the other leads to the solenoids.
