Abstract

1533971 Setting fuzes DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 27 April 1967 [29 April 1966] 19070/66 Heading F3A In an electrical fuze for a shell, rocket or missile, the igniter is operated by output voltage from a circuit adjusted in a predetermined manner. The circuit parameters are selected to the present required output voltage, by means of a network of electrical fuzes which are selectively blown. The required fuzes are blown prior to firing the shell, but the circuit is sensitive only following the action of an inertia switch operated after firing the shell. In one embodiment, the resistance network, which controls an amplifier in a proximity fuze, is short-circuited by parallel connected electric fuzes which are selectively blown by the application of preparatory signal voltages. The preparatory circuit is subsequently broken, and the fuze armed, by an inertia switch. In a second embodiment, a capacitive network is provided with series electric fuzes which are selectively broken, as in the first embodiment, so as to vary the circuit time constant, and hence the fuze timing delay. A third embodiment comprises a clock fuze timing selector. The selector contacts required to operate the igniter, and specified time after firing are released by operation of a fused network prior to firing. After firing, both inertial and centrifugal forces arm the fuze and release the clock mechanism.
