Abstract

1533937 Seat-belt retractors AMERICAN SAFETY EQUIPMENT CORP 20 Jan 1977 [18 Oct 1976] 02384/77 Heading A3V A rewind spring 60 of a seat-belt retractor is connected to the spool 20, 25 through a friction clutch means 80 operable, preferably on slight belt retraction following initial pullout, to remove the bias of the spring from the spool and thereby to reduce the pressure normally applied by the belt to the wearer. A second rewind spring 50 acting permanently on the spool is connected to a member 70 while spring 60 is connected between member 70 and the reel frame. The friction clutch has the form of a torsion spring 81 which can selectively couple or release member 70 to or from a stationary frame part 74. During belt withdrawal an actuator 58 on the spool releases the clutch so that member 70 can rotate and both springs acts on the spool. On subsequent slight retraction the clutch engages to arrest member 70 and deactivate spring 60.
