Abstract

1533506 Image pick-up tubes; electron multipliers THOMSON-CSF 4 May 1977 [7 May 1976] 18753/77 Heading HID A multidetector for receiving the X-ray tomographic image from an X-ray callimator 1 includes, located within the evacuated envelope 2, which may be of metal, a scintillator layer 4, photocathode 5, multichannel electron multiplier 6, and a plurality of detectors 10 opposed to the channels of the multiplier and individually connected through the envelope to a signal processing circuit. The multiplier 6 may comprise a sequence of secondary emissive grids 16, Fig. 3, of copper/beryllium or silver/manganese alloy, divided into cells by spacers 17 coated with a resistive layer 18 of germanium, silicon, or tin oxide to form a potential distributing bridge. Alternatively, the multiplier may be formed by channels (19, Fig. 4, not shown) in an insulating plate (21), the walls of the channels being coated with a resistive, secondary electron emissive layer to form continuous dynodes; Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) illustrate an insulating component (26) coated with layers (27 and 28) and of a shape permitting assembly together of a plurality of such components to form a complete multi-channel structure. The multiplier may also be of the reverse-biased semiconductor diode type disclosed in Specification 1,081,829.
