Abstract

1533420 Melting Al in induction loop furnaces ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 25 Aug 1977 [9 Sept 1976] 37451/76 Heading C7D Hydrogen gas is introduced into molten Al (or alloy) in a channel induction furnace before switchoff so that H 2 gas bubbles form in the solidifying melt. This is stated to prevent contraction cracking in the induction loop, whereby electric opencircuits are avoided. H2 gas may be introduced via a porous plug, or the H2 generated in situ from water (from e.g. Na 4 B 2 O 7 . 10H 2 O), steam or a hydrocarbon. N2 or other inert gas may be introduced on remelting to displace the H2.
