Abstract

153,335. Linden, L. Aug. 11, 1919. Tanks and containers, treating in aerating.- To concentrate sewage sludge, it is agitated by means of air or other gas under pressure or by mechanical means, the sludge being thus subjected to the action of reagent retained by it from previous treatment of the sewage or to the action of freshly added reagent; the agitation is stopped suddenly, the heavy matter settles, and the upper liquid can be drawn off. A suitable form of apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. It comprises settling- chambers a, b, c with agitating-arms 12, inlets 13 for gas under pressure, and a flexible draw-off pipe 11 supported by a float 10. The sludge is discharged through valves 5 into drainage buckets 7 having tapered sides and a rounded bottom and formed of slotted or perforated metal, lined with textile fabric, basket-work or wire gauze. The buckets may be removable from their frames as by a crane or hoist, or may be of the tipping type, and may run on rails on the floor 6.
