Abstract
1532860 Holographic switching systems INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 15 April 1976 15672/76 Heading G1A [Also in Divisions G2 and H4] In a holographic switching system electrical signals on incoming lines are converted to optical signals which are phase modulated by dialling signals on one of the incoming lines to select and reconstruct an image on a holographic plate corresponding to a selected one of a plurality of outgoing lines, the optical signals corresponding to said one incoming line being converted to electrical signals for transmission on said one outgoing line. In the embodiment, Fig. 1, each incoming line 6 comprises a call line 16 and a dial line 17; each call line 16 is connected to a respective diode 3 of a matrix 5 for converting electrical signals to light. Optical fibres 4 couple the diodes to an optic matrix 1. The electrical signal on each line 16 intensity modulates the light beam of the respective diode 3; all diodes 3, through matrix 1 and a linear polarizer 9 illuminate an electro-optical coupling device 7 which comprises six subarrays 7a of optical tubes 8 filled with nitrobenzene. Each tube 8 has an electrode (11) connected through a connector 17 to one of the dial lines 17 for controlling the optical transmission properties i.e. the angle of polarization of the tube depending on the electrical signal on the electrode. The dial information on each line 17 is maintained for the duration of each telephone conversation, and each subarray 7a responds to only one dialled digit signal. Thus coupler 7 applies to the light beams emitted by diodes 3 a spatial phase modulation pattern, corresponding to the signals on dial lines 17, which reproduces a unique hologram 19 on a plate 18 corresponding to an outgoing line 20. Optical signals, through the reproduced hologram 19 are received by a diode 3a through an optic matrix 1a and converted to electrical signals for transmission on the selected outgoing line. The signals on diodes 3, 3a may be PCM.
