Abstract

1532780 Polyolefine films IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 March 1976 [7 March 1975] 9562/75 Heading B5B A film is formed from a copolymer of ethylene with at least one mono-α-olefine comonomer which film has an impact strength and a stiffness modulus which are such that the impact-stiffness function defined by the relationship is at least 750. In a preferred film the stiffness modulus is 200-400 MNm<SP>-2</SP> the tear strength is at least 5 g/micron of film thickness in both machine and transverse directions, the tensile strength at break measured at a straining rate of 500 mm/minute is at least 20 MN/m<SP>2</SP>, the elongation of break measured at a straining rate of 500 mm/min. is 300-1100%, the density is 915-935 kg/m<SP>3</SP>, an annealed density of 918- 940 kg/m<SP>3</SP> the melt flow index measured at 190‹ C. using a weight of 2À16 kg is 0À05-0À7, an apparent viscosity measured at 200‹ C. and a shear rate of 100 sec<SP>-1</SP> of 0À5 x 10<SP>3</SP>-3 x 10<SP>3</SP> NSm<SP>-2</SP> and a viscosity at 200‹ C. and a stress of 10<SP>3</SP>N/m<SP>2</SP> which is at least 2 Ac (1À6 A Î 10<SP>-3</SP>) and not more than 1000 A where A is the apparent viscosity and a sheer rate of 100 sec<SP>-1</SP> and the relationship has a value of at least 18,000. The copolymer is preferably one of ethylene and a comonomer of which at least 50% molar of the mono-α-olefine has 5 or more carbon atoms. The film is formed by extrusion through an annular die followed by inflation.
