Abstract

1532603 Hydrolytic polycaprolactam DOW CHEMICAL CO 5 July 1977 [6 July 1976 26 Oct 1976] 28164/77 Heading C3N The hydrolytic melt polymerization of caprolactam is effected under pressure at 180 to 300‹ C. in the presence of 0-6 to 5 mol per cent of a primary secondary amine which does not boil at or below 245‹ C., and when most of the polymerization is complete, venting the system and placing it under inert gas or vacuum till the methanol extractables in the product have been reduced to less than 5 wt. per cent. The products have good heat stability, low extractable content, less than 30 meq./Kg. COOH ends, a R.V. of 1À7 to 3 (1 g./182À5 g. 96% H 2 SO 4 at 25‹ C.), and high affinity for acid dyes.
