Abstract

Compounds of the formula (I) <IMAGE> in which the group B is in the alpha or beta position and is a hydrocarbon radical which is substituted by one or more free or protected hydroxyl groups, of which at least one is present on the alpha carbon atom, are prepared by treating compounds of the formula (II) <IMAGE> in which the symbols Y and Z have the meaning stated in Claim 1, with an aqueous acid. The compounds of the formula (I) are valuable as intermediates for the synthesis of prostaglandins and prostaglandin analogues.
