Abstract

1532514 Purifying chlorides; refining nickel mattes INCO Ltd 19 March 1976 [8 April 1975] 11191/76 Heading C1A A process for purifying a salt comprising one or more alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorides (e.g. that which has been used in refining nickel matte wherein impurity metals in the matte are selectively chlorinated and dissolved in the salt) to remove therefrom one or more chlorides of Fe, Ni, Co, Pb, As, Zn, Mn, Cd, Ag, Bi, Au, Sn, W or Ti present as impurity comprises producing fragments of the solid salt, leaching the fragments with an organic liquid in which the salt to be refined is insoluble, comprising a reagent which is effective to form with one or more of the impurity metal chlorides an addition complex soluble in the organic liquid, and separating the impurity bearing liquid from the purified salt. Suitable complexing agents are primary, secondary and tertiary amines and quaternary ammonium chlorides. The complexing agent may be used in the form of a solution, suitable solvents being aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols or mixtures thereof. Preferred solvents are kerosine, xylene, isodecanol and mixtures thereof. A method for the preferential extraction of impurity metal chlorides other than nickel chloride, from an impurity bearing salt containing nickel chloride, is disclosed.
