Abstract

1532425 Preventing occurrence of critical conditions BRITISH NUCLEAR FUELS Ltd 25 Aug 1976 [12 Sept 1975] 37558/75 Heading G6R [Also in Division B4] An inner container, for use inside a shielded transport flask for conveying spent nuclear fuel elements to a reprocessing or storage facility, comprises a cylindrical shell 11 having a dished closure 12 at the lower end and a detachable lid 18 at the upper end, with a partitioning structure 14 defining compartments 15 each for receiving an elongate fuel element. Interspacers 16 between neighbouring compartments 15 accommodate neutron poison material for ensuring sub-criticality in transit. The partitioning is perforated at frequent intervals 17 to allow free passage around the fuel elements of a water filling acting as a heat transfer medium.
