Abstract

1531971 Machinery safety devices JAMES MACKIE & SONS Ltd 23 March 1976 [25 March 1975] 12471/75 Headings F2J and F2K An electrically controlled, or otherwise, e.g. hydraulically controlled, power-operated textile spinning machine is controlled by a switch 21, or similar device, e.g. valve, which is either enclosed (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) with the machine's driving mechanism, e.g. gearing and chain drives &c. (not shown) by a protective casing 10 having one or more hinged covers 11 or, as shown, is externally mounted on the casing 10, the switch 21 having a plunger 20, or lever (not shown), operated by a circular cam 18 carried by a manually movable cross-bar 14, 15 pivoted at 16 each side of the casing 10 whereby the covers 11 can only be opened when the cross-bar 14, 15 is raised clear of the covers 11 to stop the machine via the cam 18 and switch 21. The arrangement is such that the cross-bar 14, 15 is turnable between the lower position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which the switch plunger 20 is freely located in a recess in the circular cam 18 whereby the switch 21 is conditioned for normal operation of the machine and the hinged covers 11 are obstructed by the surrounding cross-bar 14 to prevent the covers 11 being opened, to the upper position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 in which the plunger 20 of the switch 21 is depressed by the cam 18 to stop the machine and the cross-bar 14 is raised clear of the covers 11 which can now be safely opened for maintenance access to the now stationary drive of the machine. In this latter condition, i.e. when the covers 11 are opened, the cross-bar 14 is prevented, by the covers 11, from being manually lowered whereby the machine cannot be started when the covers 11 are open. A screw 25 serves to secure the hinged covers 11 in their closed position and additionally provide a time-delay effective when the cross-bar 14 is raised to delay manual opening of the covers 11 until the machine drive mechanism is fully at a standstill. In the embodiment of Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) the cross-bar 14 has cranked ends (31, 32), at each end, to embrace pairs of hinged side covers (35, 36) each end of the casing 10, a top cover (40) interfitting with the side covers (35, 36) in such manner that the top cover is closed prior to closing the side covers to ensure all the covers are closed to allow manual lowering of the crossbar for normal operation of the machine.
