Abstract

1531952 Material for absorbing sulphur dioxide UNION CARBIDE CORP 8 Feb 1977 [9 Feb 1976] 05175/77 Addition to 1448183 Heading C3R [Also in Division B1] A method of fabricating an article which adsorbs sulphur dioxide from gas mixtures comprises (1) depositing on a support having a high surface area, an oligomer of formula where R is an alkyl group, a is 0 or 1 to 4 and n is 2 to 20, and (2) heating to convert the oligomer to a water-insoluble, cross-linked polymer, as described in Parent Specification with the modification that the support is diatomaceous earth, natural or synthetic mordenite, asbestos, vermiculite, sisal, alpha- or gamma-alumina or a macro reticular ion-exchange resin. The oligomer may be cross-linked by heating at 100� to 180� C. The support may be wetted with an aqueous solution of the oligomer, powder coated with porous particles of cross-linked, water-soluble polymer, and then heated to drive off the water and cross-link the oligomer. Examples are given.
