The speedchange is actuated if the portion is absent: the end 29a of a detecting lever 29 enters the resulting recess 1b in the cassette by spring bias 33 acting on an interconnected lever 31, and the rotation of the lever 31 counterclockwise about 31c permits a link lever 15 which engages a pin 31b on lever 31 to move clockwise about its pivot 16 by spring bias 17 so that hooked portion 18 thereof engages a pin 20 of the control member 19. Actuation of the latter in direction D thus moves lever 15 bodily, pivoting a link arm 12 against bias 14 and sliding speed-change member 7 in direction A on pins 9-11. This causes a drive motor 6 attached thereto to move axially so that a smaller diameter portion 35a of drive pulley 35, rather than larger diameter portion 35b, now engages the upper surface of capstan flywheel 5. The motor is pivoted at 6a, 6b and biased downwardly by a leaf-spring 36 (see also Figs. 7, 8). Control member 19 is then latched by spring-biased member 26 in its actuated position, but member 26 and the restoring spring bias 24 on the member 19 may be dispensed with (Figs. 5, 6, not shown). If the cassette portion (la) is present, Fig. 1 (not shown), rotation of both levers 29 and 31 is inhibited thereby, and pin 31b maintains hook 18 of link lever 15 out of engagement with pin 20. The detecting lever 29 is first released to perform its detecting function either, as shown, by the initial movement of the control member 19, a shoulder 19a thereof allowing movement of pin 31c on the lever 31 and hence pivoting of both levers 31 and 29; or, Figs. 3-6 (not shown), by a separate member (39) which is moved by the inserted cassette against spring bias (41) to release the detecting lever. Speed-change may also be achieved by electrical switching of the motor 6, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), in response to movement of the speed-change member 7.
