Abstract

153,147. McCaskey, A. S. Sept. 12, 1919. Flexible shafts.-A flexible shaft of the kind described in Specification 117,774, built up of elements 1 formed with lugs 3 to engage in notches 4, is provided with integral means for retaining the parts in position. After the parts have been assembled, a press is applied to form recesses 16, Fig. 3, in the edges of the slots 4 and small projections 17 on the lugs 3, the projections lying in the recesses to prevent lateral displacement of the elements. As shown in Fig. 6, radial projections 19 formed at the ends of the lugs 3 are bent into the adjoining element after assembling the parts. Elements formed and assembled as shown in Fig. 3 may be solid, the lugs and slots extending across the ends. Fig. 9 shows an element bent from sheet metal. The edges of the lugs and slots are bevelled to retain them in engagement.
