Abstract

In order to prepare curable adhesives or sealants, an organic polyisocyanate containing at least one ring is first reacted with a butadiene polymer or copolymer which is substituted by hydroxyl groups or non-tertiary amino groups and in which at least 50% of the butadiene units have the 1,4-configuration, and which has a mean degree of polymerisation of from 5 to 150 monomer units per molecule. The resultant product containing isocyanate groups is then reacted with an ester of acrylic acid which is unsubstituted or substituted in the alpha -position to the carboxyl group and which contains a hydroxyl group or non-tertiary amino group in the molecule. For adhesive bonding or sealing, the adhesive or sealant containing the resultant curable reaction product mixed with at least one further component is introduced between the surfaces to be treated and allowed to cure with the aid of at least one polymerisation intiator which forms free radicals. By means of corresponding polymerisation initiators, the curing takes place anaerobically or by UV irradiation. The polymerisation intiator is present in the mixture or is used separately. The mixture can be used to seal gaps greater than 1 mm in width. Cured mixtures have better thermal and impact-strength properties than known adhesives and sealants.
