Abstract

1531233 Laying submarine cables WHARTON ENGS (ELSTREE) Ltd 21 Oct 1975 [21 Oct 1974] 45502/74 Heading H2C [Also in Division F2] In laying a pipe or cable in a bed of material a tube 1 having cutting tines 5 provided on its outer surface removes by shaving material from a bed of material to form a trench when the tube is moved along the bed of material and the pipe or cable 10 is fed through the tube into the trench adjustable, skids 12 being provided to control the depth of the trench cut and the tines 5 are so disposed that in use the leading end portion of the tube is disposed above the surface of the bed of material and a portion of the other end of the tube is disposed below the surface of the bed of material. The tube is preferably of rectangular cross-section, cutter means being provided on at least two faces of the tube. The tube 1 may be pulled along a seabed by a cable 4 attached to a lay barge and a foil or foils 14 can be provided beneath the tube 1 to ensure that the skids 12 engage the surface of the sea bed. Back fill dozer blades 24 may be provided to fill the trench over the pipe or cable, and a skeleton plough may be provided ahead of the cutter means to remove boulders from the path of the cutter means. A wide front skid may be provided with an upturned front portion to stabilise the apparatus.
