Abstract

1530729 Boring earth &c SMITH INTERNATIONAL INC 18 Feb 1976 06441/76 Heading E1F [Also in Division F2] An earth boring tool assembly is characterised by a sealing ring 40 located between the bore of a rotary cutter 20 and the outside diameter of its supporting journal leg 12, the sealing ring comprising an annular metallic core 41 to which are bonded two sealing portions 42, 43 of flexible material which make an interference contact with the leg 12 and the cutter 20 respectively. Various forms of the sealing ring are shown in Fig. 5 and Figs. 7-18 inclusive (not shown). All except Fig. 7 illustrate sealing between concentric cylindrical surfaces; Fig. 7 shows a seal of the rubbing collar type. The metallic core 41 is said to provide stability, independant face loads, and cooling, assisted in some cases, e.g. as in Fig. 12 (not shown) by its exposure to lubricant.
