Abstract

1530602 FM demodulators STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 4 Oct 1976 [14 Oct 1975] 41988/75 Heading H3A An FM demodulator comprises mixers M1, M2 for mixing the received FM signal with local oscillator LO signals applied in quadrature, the mixer outputs being applied to respective differentiators D1, D2 via associated low-pass filters LP1, LP2 and amplifiers Gl, G2, providing a constant level output, multipliers M3, M4 coupled to the input of a respective differentiator and the output of the corresponding one of the other differentiator and a circuit DA for obtaining the difference in the multiplier outputs as the demodulated signal. The demodulated output may be used to control the local oscillator LO. One of the input signals of each multiplier M3, M4 may be applied via a pulsewidth modulator. The alternative embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), formed as an integrated circuit includes a first oscillator locked to an external synthesizer and a second oscillator phase locked to the first for providing the quadrature signals to the mixers M1, M2. Fig. 3 (not shown) relates to a single local oscillator supplying a first amplifier directly and a second amplifier via a 90 degree phase shift. For handling FSK signals, the circuit may incorporate special filters.
