Abstract

1517121 Data transmission; F.S.K. receivers STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 13 Jan 1977 1358/77 Heading H4P An F.S.K. radio receiver comprises first and second signal paths A, B each including a mixer circuit 1 or 2 followed by a low pass filter 5 or 6 and a limiting amplifier 7 or 8. A local oscillator 3 running at the carrier frequency fc of the received signal is connected directly to mixer circuit 1 and through a 90‹ phase shift circuit 4, e.g. an RC circuit, to the other mixer circuit 2. The outputs from the amplifiers 7 and 8 are connected respectively to the CK and D inputs of a D-type flip-flop 9 having an output Q. In operation, the received signals have a' frequency fc Œ # kHz where # is the FSK modulation deviation; when the signal is offset by + # kHz the arrangement is such that the amplifiers deliver two square waves in quadrature and this quadrature phase shift is reversed when the offset shifts to -# kHz. The flipflop 9 is positive-edge triggered on the CK input to give a one or a zero at the Q output, whichever is present at the D input during the clock transition. The receiver thus produces a logical output, representative of the original modulation, depending whether the input signal is high or low of the local oscillator. The wave-forms associated with the operation of the flip-flop 9 are described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown). In a modification a second D-type flip-flop is provided with amplifier 8 connected to its CK input and amplifier 7 connected to its D input, the Q output of one flipflop and the Q output of the other flip-flop being added algebraically. It is stated that this arrangement improves error-rate performance at low signal to noise ratios.
