Abstract
1530596 Vehicle brake modulators; valves GIRLING Ltd 27 Nov 1975 [17 Dec 1974 24 April 1975] 54554/74 and 17105/75 Headings F2F and F2V A brake modulator has a chamber 7 connected to a master cylinder and a slave cylinder, and an expander piston 3 retractable by a spring 9 to increase the volume of the chamber 7 and close a valve 10 between the master cylinder and the slave cylinder. The piston 3 is controlled pneumatically in response to a signal from deceleration sensing means by a first valve 14 connected through inlet 20 to a source of pneumatic pressure, and a second valve 15 downstream of the valve 14 for controlling communication between the chamber 8 and an exhaust passage 21, the valve 15 consisting of a diaphragm 32 movable between seatings 23, 24 in response to pressure in the chamber 17. The arrangement is such that when the signal is inoperative the first valve 14 is open and the second valve 15 is held closed to isolate chamber 8 from the exhaust passage and when the signal is operative the first valve 14 isolates the inlet passage from the supply chamber 17 and reduces the pressure therein so that the second valve can open, the first valve being substantially smaller than the second whereby the pressure in the modulator chamber 8 can be reduced rapidly in response to a relatively small reduction of the pressure in the supply chamber. In a modified construction (Fig. 3) the seating 19 of valve 14 comprises an annulus surrounding an opening 32 in the centre of valve member 22 of valve 15 so that exhaust passage 21 can be eliminated by using exhaust passage 28 of valve 15. In a further modification (Fig. 4) a safety device has a casing containing a diaphragm 33 backed by a plate 35 and urged by a spring 39 stronger than the spring of the modulator pneumatic unit so that if pressure fails member 1 is advanced by a rod 36 under the influence of spring 39 to open valve 10 and allow normal braking.
